Leon Redbone was a popular singer and guitarist known for his love of performing vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley songs who appeared many times on “Saturday Night Live” and “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson. Though his act was unusual, he developed a strong cult following, known for wearing a Panama hat, dark sunglasses, and a black tie. Redbone sang the theme song for the sitcom, “Mr. Belvedere,” appeared on film and TV shows, and voiced Leon the Snowman in the movie “Elf.” He released 16 albums during his career. Fans included Bob Dylan and Jack White.

I would sit out on my deck in the country, surrounded by the crickets and insects. In complete darkness I would sit between two large electrostatic speakers and listen to Leon while sipping a cold beer. I swear that he was there. He still is.

I met Mr. Redbone outside of a show he played in Jacksonville, FL at a place that used to be called Freebird Cafe. He was walking out with his bandmates and stopped to chat with me and my buddy. Such a relaxed and friendly guy and genuinely was happy to run into a couple of fans after the show. I will never forget meeting him. I was glad to have seen him live and to have shaken his hand before he headed on to Miami on that tour.

I first 'discovered' Leon Redbone while in the British Army in 1979. A soldier friend of mine had Leon's newish album 'Double Time.' I'd never heard of him at that time, being aged 22 and more 'Rock' inclined. Initially Leon's 'distinctive style' took me by surprise. However, after a few listens, while soaking several beers, I got blown away by each/every track and a love affair was born with Leon's incredible talent. He was the catalyst, that slowly led me away from my first love 'Rock,' into my true love...'Blues.' Thank you Leon. I'm listening to you as I write this, you have always been a hero to me since those days of my youth. I'm now 64 and still a loyal fan...and always will be. RIP Leon, thanks for all the joy you and your music has given to the world.

I bought his albums, recorded them on tape, and learned every song in my 8-hour drives back and forth when I was moving. I still sing those songs 30 years later. He was a key musician in my sojourn on this planet, bringing Joy in turbulent times. And he will always live in my heart, and the funny little ditties I sing. An artist that made an indelible highway in my life.

I saw him in 1987 in upstate New York at a little diner the morning before he did a concert. There he was having a Belgian waffle, baby blue socks with a white palm tree on each one. A tie jauntily tossed over one shoulder. Friendly but engrossed in the feast before him. After a brief awkward gushing, I left with my dad. Who asked who was he? I said one of the most influential people in my life, other than you. Still singing both of their cheesy, retro songs. Loving the joy of singing every note just like a little bird in the forest before the dawn.

Leon, I will see you on that beautiful shore.

My heart stuck in my throat to hear Leon had passed on today. I first heard of him about 1980 in Scotland and started to get his albums. What a voice and what a grasp he had of vintage American music, delivered with deceptive simplicity, great guitar playing and surreal persona. Al Jolson, Bing Crosby and the great blues singers were all suggested by his voice, with a touch of Salvador Dali, but Leon was more than the sum of his influences, absolutely unique. I was fortunate to see him several times at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival in the last twenty years, once with Scott Black and the visually arresting Cyndi Cashdollar. On one occasion, rushing out the back of the tent to get home, I bumped into him and thanked him for the great set. 'Thanks', he said with slightly delayed, laid back reaction as I noticed how small he was! Somehow he personified a quietly joyful integrity and spirituality through his work, uplifting yet at times hilarious! He was the Ghost of the St Louis Blues personified and I hope to meet him on his side of Heaven. So sad! Leon, I Hope Gabriel Likes your Music.

We shot a lot of pool and shared alot of shots... that passed between us... on either side of us and over our heads, but one right under both our noses! (Seriously, no BS.) He was driving at the time, on the road from Tra Vinh to Cang Long, and a fine job he did. I was riding shotgun, but returned the fire with my M-16 and not an actual shotgun. It's time people knew about your service, unbelievable as it is. RIP, Sir.

A terrible loss. Followed Leon for years. First time I saw him was at the Town Crier Cafe in upstate New York. What a show. I remember he pulled out a tape measure and after the music stopped he opened the tape and stated "It won't be long now" His family should be proud of the happiness he brought. Stay wierd Leon. Sincere condolences to the family of Leon Redbone. My heart goes out to you. He was a talented, kind, cultured, and gracious gentleman, with a vast knowledge of music history. There was a group of us who used to see him regularly at his Chicago-area gigs, and he always stopped to chat with us. I feel as though I lost a beloved uncle, and am grieving along with you. Here's hoping that he's happy in his Blue Heaven.

What can I say. Our time goes way back when he was living in Toronto, Ontario. Him and I and a group of mutual friends often got together to play a game of billard's (he was a closet player), listen, play and talk about music and though he was eccentric and occasionally wore a red baron leather hat...he was as quick-witted as he was secretive. His passion for his music was epic. His star quickly rose when he moved to the states. A giant...that will be greatly missed.

The year around 1980...the place, Mancini's Lounge, McKee's Rocks, Pa....I was with work Friends and Friend Tom "Turbo" Meyer....Bought Turbo a new harmonica....Leon let him play long a couple tunes...After everyone left,I bought Leon and Jonathan Dorn (sousaphone) a beer, Rolling Rock. We sat and chatted me asking Leon where he was from....without hesitation he said Latrobe, I was dumbfounded, then he looked over top of those sunglasses at me and snickered. Duh, he was reading the beer bottle ! A funny but unforgettable memory of such an awesome man ! Thank you Leon !

Leon was the first world renowned solo performing artist I ever heard live. My then boyfriend took me to a tiny bar in either Cleveland, or Buffalo......and, Leon sat up front, just a few feet from everyone there, under one warm light that haloed his hatted head. I don't think he ever looked up, not once. I was transfixed. Thank you, Leon Redbone. You did it all, just right.

I had the privilege of shooting promos with Leon for his record label. It was a pleasure spending the day into evening walking around the French Quarter with Leon, circa 1990. His wife, Beryl, was with us the whole day, and their devotion to each other was apparent. Leon was a quiet presence, a true gentleman. His Christmas Island is a perennial favorite with our family at Christmas time, from cassette to CD to digital. He was a unique and gifted artist, always true to himself and the music he kept alive. My condolences to Beryl and the entire family.

He came to Valparaiso Indiana back in the mid 70's. I went to see him. I was so excited.....I played the classical guitar and I thought the way Leon's style and the way he played was so effortlessly. The audience waited and waited and finally after 15 minutes, it was announced that Leon was sick, but his band would come out to play. We were all so disappointed. Sadly I never got an opportunity to see Leon live, but have always enjoyed his music to this day. RIP

Leon Redbone was a cool glass of lemonade on a muggy day, one with perhaps a dollop of something added made from corn grain and mercy. When he strummed and sang I stopped, leaned in, listened and smiled because he always made me happy, every last time. Thank you Mr. Redbone for a life of style and charm, for muttering wit and twinkling eyes (and thank you Dickran Gobalian for sharing him). May flights of angels get you a guitar and a microphone, a chair and a panama hat...
