Louis Chapoton Obituary

Louis J. Chapoton, Jr., age 79, of New Orleans, Louisiana, passed away on December 17, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Louis is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Beverly Poché Chapoton; his daughters, Denise Chapoton and Andrée Chapoton Powell, his son-in-law, James E. Powell, Jr.; and four grandchildren, Harrison, Patrick, Benjamin and Charlotte Powell. He is also survived by his brothers, Gene and Larry Chapoton, and his sisters, Elaine Chapoton Shubert, Kay Chapoton and Sharon Chapoton McCormick. He is preceded in death by his son, Rene J. Chapoton, his father, Louis J. Chapoton, Sr., his mother, Doris Mouton Chapoton, and brother, Marc Chapoton. Louis was born in New Orleans on October 7, 1944. He spent his early years in Harahan, Louisiana, and graduated from Francis T. Nicholls High School in New Orleans, where he went to the state championships with the baseball team. He traveled the world with the Merchant Mariners and served his country honorably with the Army in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star Medal, among other honors. He spent time as a painter and art gallery owner in the French Quarter, then went on to complete his bachelor's degree at the University of New Orleans during his 25-plus year career as an aerospace designer, working with the NASA space shuttle program at Lockheed Martin. Louis loved classical music and art, baseball, history and science, and had a lifetime mind for learning. He was the family chef, chess instructor, builder of treehouses, rockets and lemonade stands, and repairer of all things. But of all his accomplishments, his primary focus and goal in life was to be the best husband, father and grandfather that he could be, and in that pursuit, he accomplished his goal ten times over. He took immense pride and joy in his family, and his dedication was unwavering. He will always be the "#1 Pops" in all of our hearts. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 6500 Kawanee Ave., Metairie, Louisiana, 70003, on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. with visitation preceding the services beginning at 10:30 a.m. A burial with military honors will follow the services on January 17, 2024, 10:00 a.m. at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Slidell under the direction and care of Grace Funeral Home.
