Louis Stern Obituary

Dr. Louis Stern, 91, passed away early Monday morning in New Orleans at Lambeth House. Of Jewish faith, he was a member of Shir Chadash Conservative Congregation. A Louisiana native, he was the youngest of six children born to Samuel and Rachel Stern in Shreveport, LA. In death he is preceded by his parents and four of his siblings, Evelyn, Helen, Sara, and Freda, and is survived by his brother Dr. Charles Stern. Louis and Janice were married for 64 years. They met in New Orleans when Louis was in his residency in pathology and Janice was in nursing school. They shared a long and loving relationship. They have three sons, Martin (Amanda Rubinstein Stern), Howard, and Michael (Amy Haimsohn Stern); four grandchildren, Reuben (Shanna Slank), Moriah (fiancé David Chinh), Julian, and Sadie; and two great-grandchildren, Akiva and Efraim. As a young man he possessed a curious and scientific mind, a diligent and enterprising character, and distinguished himself in his studies. He graduated from LSU in Baton Rouge, and continued at LSU Medical School, specializing in Pathology, and he was awarded a cancer research fellowship investigating multiple myeloma of tumors of the bone marrow. His internship was at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, and his residency was at Charity Hospital. He was an officer and physician in the US Air Force, posted at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, and Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. He returned to New Orleans, where he joined Farris, Wascom, and Stern, renamed Pathology Associates of Jefferson, and was Laboratory Director of the West Jefferson Medical Center for 26 years and Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology at LSU Health Sciences Center. To his family, Louis was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. To his community, he was an active contributor, generous with both his resources and his time, serving on the boards of The Blood Center, Jewish Children's Regional Service, Communal Hebrew School, and his synagogue. Louis's family expresses their sincerest gratitude for the compassionate care provided by Lambeth House and Guardian Angel Hospice. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at 10:30am at Shir Chadash Synagogue, 3737 West Esplanade Ave, Metairie with visitation beginning at 9:30am, Rabbi Scott Hoffman will officiate. Dear Janice and Family,

I was so very sorry to learn that Louis passed away.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to you.

I didn't have a caregiver who could bring me to Louis's service and to his minyon.

Louis always made me feel he was very happy to see Reuben and me, and we felt the same way about him.

I will remember Louis always - with much affection.

I am thinking of you, Janice and family.

With Love,

Marlene
