Luther Tyler Obituary

Luther Terrell "Terry" Tyler, 67, of Somerville, Massachusetts died on July 24 after a cruelly long period of illness. Terry was a member of the Wellesley College Department of English from 1978 until 2017. He grew up in New Orleans, a city whose culture he loved, studied, taught, and was shaped by. He graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in 1969 and earned a Bachelor's Degree in English at Southwestern College (now Rhodes College) in Memphis. After attending Southwestern Terry came north to Yale for his PhD, before joining the Wellesley faculty, where he quickly became a beloved teacher and colleague, and a winner of the Pinanski Prize for excellence in teaching. In addition to his training in English Literature, Terry was a deeply informed lover of movies and sport and of popular music and culture. Over the course of his career, he taught courses on Romantic Poetry, Shakespeare, Medieval literature, Milton, the history of the novel, and others. In addition, he designed and taught courses in many subjects, including the culture of New Orleans, in Southern Literature, in the Literature of Suffering, in Twentieth Century British Cinema, in Gospel Music and Devotional Poetry. To talk to Terry about any of these subjects - and many more - was an exhilarating experience. He was one of the great talkers in the very talkative world of the academy - lively, funny, always choosing the surprising and exact formulation that brought to shareable life the object of his attention. He will be deeply missed by his colleagues, by his many former students, by his neighbors and fellow gardeners in Somerville; and, especially, by his wife of 30 years, Jane Becker, his daughters Molly and Ella, his brothers Steve and Doug Tyler of New Orleans, his nieces and nephews and sisters-in-law, and by all who had the irreplaceable pleasure of knowing him. There will be a Memorial Service at Wellesley College in the fall. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center or to the Wellesley College Students' Aid Association.

Tyler was much too young to pass on. My sincere sympathies to Jane, Molly, Ella and the whole family and regrets that I was not able to make either ceremony as it turns out. May he finally Rest In Peace and without suffering.

My deepest sympathy to Terry's wife and children. He was a lovely human being. I don't know the count for how many lives Terry touched, inspired, and changed as an English Professor at Wellesley. We were each so damn lucky. I'm just grateful that I happened to be at Wellesley when Terry Tyler was teaching English, and that I had the good fortune to wander into his class and have my life turned around.

Rest in peace, Terry. You were one of my most memorable English professors for so many reasons. Thank you. Nabokov!

Jane, Molly, and Ella, I am so sorry to hear this news. Terry was just a wonderful man, and I am so sad at the unfairness and senselessness of his untimely passing. I will always remember his sense of humor and his wonderful storytelling as we stood on the sidelines of countless soccer games, or when we ran into him around Somerville. He loved all of you so very much, and that love will always be a part of you.

Not only was Terry proud of his lovely daughters, he was unfailingly delighted and bemused by them. We knew this long ago as fellow soccer parents and it was true to the end. He was a warm and charming person to all who knew him, a humble and passionate person as well. His humility would often manifest itself in jokes at his own expense. He could afford that expense because of the terrific intellect he possessed. We'll so miss our excellent neighbor and friend. My husband Ray will miss Terry's insights on the many movies they watched together over the last couple of years. He helped also in the birth throws of my poetry chapbook many years ago. I am eternally grateful for the care he took in reading and taking so seriously my efforts. We have lost a sterling soul. Great sympathies to dear Jane, Molly, and Ella.

I had the good fortune to take three classes with Prof Tyler. One day, to demonstrate hack writing, Terry tossed off a paragraph or two of a detective novel. The demonstration failed because the entire class was RIVETED by his story and begged him to go on! Every class with him was a delight.

Mr. Tyler was one of my favorite professors at Wellesley. He was my advisor and friend. My heart goes out to his family at this sad time. I will always remember his wit, wisdom and his incredibly disorganized office!

Mr. Tyler was central to my time at Wellesley. I loved him and learned from him--from the sample class I attended when I was deciding whether on not to attend, all the way through to graduation. Some of his funniest remarks come back to me all the time. I loved him so much. I am so sorry he is gone and that he suffered so much before his death. May he rest in peace.

Jane, Molly and Ella, I was so sorry to find out about Terry. It was only by accident that we met again after so many years at Mt. Auburn. I saw that Terry was suffering. He is now at peace without pain. I don't have to tell you all how wonderful, kind and delightful he was because you saw that each and every day in him. You are all blessed because you all belonged to him. Cherish all the memories you have made and know he is now in a better place. He will always be watching and will be there in spirit to guide you.
