Martin Venezia Obituary

It is with great sorrow to announce that Martin Joseph Venezia passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2018, at the age of 69. Martin was a loving father, grandfather and friend. He was a lifelong resident of New Orleans and a graduate of Cor Jesu. He loved his city and served with the NOPD for over 20 years, attaining the rank of lieutenant and solving numerous homicides as lead detective. He loved to have fun and entertain with his jokes and stories. He was an avid reader and constant learner who inspired us all by returning to college at the age of 67, making the Dean's list despite illness. We could not be more proud of him! He will be missed greatly. He will be forever remembered and cherished by his children, Gina Venezia (Jeff), John Venezia (Dana), and Teresa Venezia Bowman (Brian); his grandchildren, Tina and TJ France, Maria and Sofia Venezia, Fynn and Annabel Bowman, and Cecilia Turocy; his sister, Melinda Schilleci Hughes; the mother of his children and former spouse, Marsha Martinez; and enumerable close friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents Johnny Venezia, Louise Alford Schilleci, and John Schilleci. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at 11:00 am to celebrate Martin's life at St. Pius X, 6666 Spanish Fort Blvd, New Orleans, LA. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. A celebration of Martin's life will continue at the home of John and Dana Venezia at 319 14th Street, New Orleans, LA from 1-5 pm. All are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, please send charitable donations to the Fraternal Order of Police. JACOB SCHOEN & SON in charge of the arrangements. I worked with Martin on the N.O.P.D. while in the 1st District in the mid-70's. You could always depend upon Martin to 'have your back' in any situation. He had a fantastic sense of humor. I'll always have fond memories of him.

My condolences to Martin's family. I spoke with Martin a while back and we were to meet up one day, but alas that will never be. Martin will be missed.

I am very sorry to hear of Martin's passing. I worked with Martin in the Homicide unit in the late 70's. In fact, he and I were both rookies in Homicide riding together on the night shift. We were told that night if a homicide occurred we were in rotation to handle it. Of course one did occur and we were assigned to handle it. This was the first homicide for both of us to handle from start to finish as Homicide Detectives.

I have many great memories of Martin and wish his family my heartfelt condolences.
