Mary Wendt Obituary

On March 10, 2017, Mary Chopin Wendt passed away peacefully at the age of 73. Mary was surrounded by those who loved her most after a private, hard-fought battle with cancer. Mary is survived by her loving daughter and closest companion, Meredith Wendt Pinkerton (Michael); devoted daughter-in-law, Caroline Williamson Wendt; older brother, L. Frank Chopin; "substantially younger brother", Richard "Dick" Chopin (Denise); beloved grandchildren, Hadley Chopin Pinkerton, William Richard Pinkerton, Mary Avery Pinkerton, Cecily Adair Pinkerton, and Evangeline Rose Wendt; and a host of adoring nieces and nephews, their spouses and children. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Richard Paul Wendt, Jr.; husband, Richard Paul Wendt, Sr.; parents, Alton and Floretta Chopin; and brothers, Lanny Chopin and Robert Chopin. A graduate of Academy of the Holy Angels, Loyola University, and Tulane University, Mary was a Board Certified Social Worker who dedicated her life to helping those less fortunate than herself. A long-time employee of Uptown Dialysis and its successor, Davita, Mary worked tirelessly on behalf of dialysis patients. The National Kidney Foundation recognized her years of volunteer service with the prestigious Social Worker of the Year Award. She was an active volunteer for Pink House and served on the Humana Senior Advisory Board up until her death. Despite her professional and volunteer achievements, Mary's true vocation and greatest joy were her 5 grandchildren. A daily and integral presence in their young lives, Mary was actively involved in their schools, The Academy of the Sacred Heart and Holy Name of Jesus. Ever proud and doting, she never missed an opportunity to celebrate their academic and extra-curricular successes. Her crowning achievement was the creation of a close-knit immediate and extended family bound together by her love, humor, and dedication to their individual and collective happiness. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Mary's extraordinary life on Monday, March 13, 2017, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. followed by Mass at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Mary's favorite charity, Second Harvest Food Bank. To sign and view the guest book, visit www.lakelawnmetairie.com.

I would like to extend my deepest condolences to your family. I first met Mary at the Humana Guidance Center where we both attended the seminars offered to us. I also saw Mary at the Pink House and had no idea she was sick. Mary was always very pleasant and greeted everyone with a smile. May God bless each and every one of you and keep you in the palm of His hands. Elaine Bijou

As one of Mary's classmates at AHA and one of the "MAMAs" - our core reunion group, of which Mary was also a member, I am deeply saddened that I could not attend today's services due to my own illness. Mary was a delight to be with and our group enjoyed a number of luncheons and reunions. Her smile and sweet demeanor are just two things I will always remember. She was indeed a woman of courage and inspiration as she fought the cancer. God bless all her family. I will be praying for all.

I met Mary when I started in dialysis Social Work. Once DaVita acquired Gambro, I began to know her better. Mary was a very precise Social Worker, and loved working with her patients. She was the leader who we went to for our NKF (National Kidney Fund) grant request. She always carried herself with dignity and professionalism. Mary will be missed.

Mary was the bright light of my senior year in High School. I so loved spending time with her. She taught me how to be a friend, and how to gracefully get through the difficulties of adolescence. Her continued friendship meant more than I can say. Even as she went through cancer and its painful treatments, she remained gracious, people-centered, and thoughtful. I regret her loss deeply, and I extend my most sincere condolences to her family.

Miss Mary was one of the nicest people I've ever met. She was so kind to us in high school when we'd come by with Richard. The world has lost a light this week.

Mere was such a beautiful light in our lives,,,through Nutcracker rehearsals and just the grace of her presence. She will be dearly missed. My deepest love and prayers are with the family. I lost my mother recently and you can never fill the gap, yet appreciate the beautiful memories and impact on the children...that is in stone. I cannot express how much I feel for you all other than I am here for you. Always.
