Mattie Crockett Obituary

Her master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; thou have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of the Lord (Matthew 25:23). In March 31, 2015 Mattie L. Crockett, 70, of New Orleans, Louisiana entered Heaven's Gates. Mattie was born in Amite County of Liberty Mississippi on February 7, 1945 to the union of the late Leo and Annie Bell McKnight. She was a consummate mother and believer. One of her favorite scriptures was Psalm 37:3 'Trust in the LORD and do good, live in the land and practice being faithful'. She worked tirelessly on behalf of her children and grandchildren; yet, treated everyone like they were her own family. She never met a stranger, always believed the best about others and gave the best of her service to her church and place of employment. Mattie was a long-time member of New Saint Mark Baptist Church and work at Munholland United Methodist Church of Metairie, Louisiana for over 30 years. Coming of age, Mattie was a military spouse. She has always been independent, always gave the best of her service and always got the very best out of others. She was a great friend and neighbor; with her best friends being her sisters and brothers. Mattie had an unwavering faith in God and through the years was very involved with her church. She was a talented soloist who also sang in the choir. One of her favorite songs was sung by Mahalia Jackson, entitled 'When You Hear My Home Going, Don't Worry About Me'. In her leisure and retirement, Mattie spent time enjoying family, friends, fishing and flea markets. Other interest included gardening and collecting different figurines from around the crescent city. She loved western and sitcom movie channels, laughing with family and enjoying the sanctuary of her beautiful home. She was an avid New Orleans Saints Football fan and enjoyed watching "Dem Boyz" play. Mattie leaves behind to cherish her loving memories: two Children, Son, Chaplain (Lieutenant Colonel) Juan M. Crockett (Rochelle) who serves on active duty at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD; and Daughter, Deiontia M. Crockett, Baton Rouge, LA; (9) Grandchildren; Tyrone (Latchia) of Dallas, TX, Ashley, Tajuanna, Lionel, Angel, Sean and Shanaya (Crockett), all of New Orleans, LA; Kammal Peterson (Tanita), who serves on active duty at Camp Smith, Hawaii and Ashley Peterson, Fort Knox, KY; (2) Brothers, Mason (Lozetta) McKnight of McComb, MS and Willie (Dorothy) McKnight of New Orleans; (4) Sisters, Dora Kelley, Joan McKnight (a devoted sister), Kattie Conrad, all of New Orleans, LA, and Sally Brumfield of Houston, TX; (11) great grandchildren and a host of many nieces, nephews friends and other family members. She is proceeded in death by (1) Brother, Deacon Otis McKnight Sr. and (1) Great Granddaughter, Mariah Crockett. A Celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at Majestic Mortuary Service 1833 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. New Orleans, LA 70113. Visitation will be from 8:00-10:00 AM. Interment Private. Mattie was one of my favorite people ever. I met her at Munholland 30 years ago when I was a young single girl. I was away for several years, and when I returned to Munholland, Mattie was so happy to see me and to find out I was married with a family. I know she is rejoicing in heaven.
God bless Mattie and her family,
Jan Schluter
