Michael Balazs Obituary

On Tuesday, March 5, 2019, Michael Andrew Balazs, husband and father of three children, passed away at the age of 65. Michael was born in 1954 in Euclid, Ohio to Paul and Helen Balazs. Ever a colorful character, his interests included biking, scuba diving, coin collecting, keeping up with current events, an uncanny ability to describe the future 'state of the economy,' reading the newspaper, listening to the radio, or tending to the ever expanding plant menagerie he cultivated with skills learned over the years when he wasn't cooking delicious food for the family or playing popcap games on the internet. He was awarded a masters gardening certificate from LSU and was a radio DJ for many years known as "Blazebrown." Mike was preceded in death by his mother Helen, his father Paul, and his "favorite buddy" Baloo the cat. He is survived by his wife Lornalin "Rose," his three children, Daniel, Lauren and Andrew and a host of loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and longtime friends from around the world. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist New Orleans Church, 5290 Canal Blvd on March 10 from 3-5 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to either National Public Radio, the Louisiana SPCA or Zeus Animal Rescue.

I think I first met my cousin Mike when he was about 3 or 4 when I came to live with his family. I was in 6th grade. Mike came to visit us later in CA and was in my wedding in 1966 there. We were able to reconnect over the years as he would call to talk at all hours of the day and night! Maybe because of his radio schedule.. I was finally able to visit him and the family there in New Orleans in 2010 after they were able to return to their home after rebuilding after Katrina. Managed to visit again a couple of years ago on our way to Africa. Tried to send packages yearly at Christmas with the Hungarian cookies he and his mom loved- she sent me the recipe and we enjoyed them every year!!. When we visited he was a great tour guide for NO. He will be greatly missed.

To Blaze's family and friends: I was a deejay and hung out at his show for years, he was a good friend, the funniest person I've ever known and a great artist. I think I speak for my WTUL friends when I say he influenced our lives greatly and for the better, made us laugh and enjoy life. I will always remember the year both he and I did the 24 hour deejay shifts for Marathon. Afterwards, he gave me a tape with some of my programming and a handmade collage of absurd images. We will never forget all that Blaze did for us and the radio station.

Good vibrations and positive thoughts to everyone, Blaze was a wonderful human being.

"Blaze" thought differently, and challenged those around him to not only vacate their accepted norms during a conversation, but integrate an appreciation for life's absurdity, and potential for beauty, into their worldview. Realization of this man's chaotic profundity was often asynchronous, but never trivial.
