Mynna Weiss

Waterford - Mynna Kalman Weiss died on Wednesday, January 30th, peacefully in her home with loved ones and caregivers and the staff of Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut.

Mynna Kalman Weiss was born on Jan. 24, 1917 in the Bronx, N.Y., to a large immigrant Jewish family with eight brothers and sisters. Mynna enjoyed a culturally rich childhood. She spoke Yiddish and English at home. Mynna excelled in school and was part of the "rapid advance" program and graduated high school at barely 16 years of age.

Mynna attended Beth Israel Nursing School in New York City and received her registered nurse certification. Many years later she received her bachelor of science degree from Pacific University.

Mynna married the brother of a nursing school classmate, Louis Weiss, in 1942.

Mynna and Lou had three children, Peter, Susan and Gary. They lived in Washington D.C., Illinois, Texas, Queens, and Plainview, Long Island. Mynna combined motherhood with part-time and full-time nursing jobs in hospitals, public health, schools and colleges.

Mynna and Lou had an active retirement which included volunteer work, founding of the RADISH club for seniors, Temple committee work, Elderhostels and many visits to children and grandchildren. After traveling all over the world, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

In 2004, Mynna moved to Atria Crossroads Assisted Living in Waterford when she needed to be close to her daughter for medical and personal care.

Mynna is survived by her three children and their spouses, Peter Weiss and Lois Weiss, Susan Weiss and Mark Newall, and Gary Weiss and Mary Weiss. Her wonderful grandchildren, Jonathan and Anna, Jennifer and Stuart, Michael, Nomi and Zeke, Leorah and Zoe and great-grandchild, Ella, will all mourn her passing.

Mynna Kalman Weiss is well loved by friends, caregivers and family because of her unique sense of humor, her kindness, her wisdom and her optimism.

We thank all of her caregivers and friends for sticking close to her in her illness.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. at Thomas Neilan and Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London, officiated by Rabbi Aaron Rosenberg.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, February 1, at 10:30 a.m. at the Pinelawn Cemetery in Melville, Long Island.

Peter and Lois Weiss will hold shivah at their home in Suffern, N.Y., beginning on Sunday.
