Paul Leary Obituary

We celebrate the life of Paul James Leary Sr., who passed away peacefully at the age of 84, on September 1, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones and his devoted dog, Bella. Born on September 21, 1939, in Urbana, Illinois, Paul was a cherished son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Paul was the beloved son of the late Frederick William and Eleanor Young Leary. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph "Bill" Leary and Patrick "Pat" Leary. His legacy continues through his remaining brother, Frederick "Mic" Leary, and sister, Mary Lee Leary Tremaine. Paul's loving commitment to family was also beautifully exemplified through his marriage of 65 years to his devoted wife, Mary Leary. Together, they built a loving home and raised a family that includes their daughters, Karen Leary, Laura and her husband, Kerry Johnston, Paula Lutz, Regina and her husband, Ricky Cox, Patty and her husband, Robert Torres, and their son, Paul Leary Jr. The proud patriarch of a large, close-knit family, Paul leaves behind an enduring legacy with his 14 grandchildren: Sheree Cuevas, Brittany (Marc) Coleman, Mandy Keene, Hayley (Joe) Marks, Kelly Johnston, Jordan Lutz, Jonah Lutz, Madeline Lutz, McKayla Lutz, Krista Cox, Tyler (Marissa) Cox, Caleigh Leary, Abby Leary, and Paul Leary III, as well as 20 great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss him dearly. Paul loved fishing and football, good jokes, and good food, but loved his family most of all. He was a man of few words who loved being anywhere his family was together. His family will remember him as a man who lived a life of generosity. He was humble and selfless, caring not only for his family but also for the children of his community. Through his work with the Lacombe Parks and Recreation Board, he ensured that every child had the opportunity to play sports. For many years, you would find both him and Mary at the ballfield every Saturday of the season. Paul's memory will be cherished and his life celebrated as an example of true devotion to family and community. Services will be held at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Slidell, Louisiana, on Monday, September 9, 2024. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at noon. Paul will be laid to rest in Forest Lawn Cemetery following services.
