Ms Barbara, Phil gave me my first job, while I was in high school. He taught me in the same manner a father would teach a son. When my dad passed in 1971, Phil , whom I always called "The Chief" was a second father to me. He stuck with me and was always on my side, put up with all my short comings, hair-brain schemes, marriages (and I had a few) and even after my Marine days he was a man that was literally my example to follow. If only I could have even come close to being more like him, I would be one hell of a man today. he, by far, is one of the finest, no, is the finest man it was ever my privilege to know. If I started recounting all the great memories of you and Phil, I'd be talking for a year or more. I remember trying to put up toys in the store, while Maryellen sat on the floor playing with them. I remember the Christmas parties at y'alls coin-du-lestin home. And no matter what, the Christmas bonus we all got every single year. I had the greatest learning time of my life for 8 wonderful years under "The Chief's" direction and was honored to learn from a man that not only had never-ending patience with a young idiot like me, but more importantly, taught me what having love, affection and true caring for all the customers, all of the time. He taught me what having love for a family was all about. Made me feel i was a paart of y'alls family.I can't remember a Saturday night, that he didn't leave for an hour or so to run to go to Mass at church. In the days before computers,I remember coming to work on Saturday mornings, before the store opened, and he's already be there, walking the isles with his notebook and a pen taking the inventory . He trusted me to use the company vehicle and drive in to New Orleans to the drug companies to pick up the orders for stock, then go to the old store on Franklin avenue to check the stock in. We didn't have labels so everything was price marked with an old ink hand stamper. That trust is something I always have cherished. Phil could have just treated me like a worthless employee, just there to get a paycheck at the end of the week. That was never in Phil's nature. He believed in me and showed that to me each and every day I worked at G & W. All the customers knew him as Mr. Phil, I think partly cause a lot of them had a problem pronouncing y'alls last name ! We had several folks in the G & W crew that will always be dear to me. Mrs. Wolcott, Mr Clyde, Mr, Jimmy of course, Mrs Talley, Mrs Newbill, Duane, Anita, and David. But keeping us all together and operating as a team, was our captain, "The Chief", Mr. Phil. I thank God for the honor of knowing such a reverent, honest and loving man. God Speed, Chief !

Mr. Phil was such a wonderful man and pharmacist. I have fond memories of going to G & W Drugs when I was very young. Our entire family trusted Mr. Phil exclusively when we had a prescription to fill. To Maryellen and the whole family, I send my deepest sympathy and pray for you.

Wingerter Family,
Though we didn't know Mr. Phil personally, we do know a little of his son and "daughter", Eric and Ann. Wonderful friends with tremendous, caring hearts, always nurturing and unselfishly laying down their lives for others. Committed to family. Committed to love. Committed to God.
So, had the opportunity arisen, we would have said to Mr. Phil... "You've done good. You should be proud." You are leaving a legacy of faithful, loving children, grands and great grands.. To make this earth a better place... to make it shine a little brighter.
May our Heavenly Father give courage and strength to all in this time of grief, and may He restore joy in the hearts of Mr. Phil's family.
"You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in Your bottle. You have recorded each one in Your book."
Psalms 56:8
May He bring comfort to your broken hearts and shelter you under the shadow of His wings... For He is faithful.
Much love and prayer,
John, Cheryl and Luke

Barbara, Jack, Jim and Family,
You all were a large part of my life from an early age of 14 yrs old. I didn't know it at the time, but my early time at the G&W Pharmacy and with the Wingerter Family would go into my twenties. Jim and I were closest in age, but I think Phil and I spent the most time together, especially after he finished school and returned from the Army.
I recall stories Phil told me about his Motorcycle escapades and some with his friend "Bugs". I can only picture Phil with a smile on his face.
Phil and I began to work together at the Franklin Ave Pharmacy on Robert E. Lee, and then after I returned from My Air Force active duty, I helped with setting up the G&W Drugs in Slidell. Phil and all of the Wingerters made me feel more like one of the family than an employee.
I will never forget those days and thank you all for the memories. I send my prayers and condolences to you at this time.
Barbara, you and your family were blessed to have such a great person as a husband and father. I am sure he is in heaven looking after you all now.

Our deepest condolences to the entire family. Phil(Pop) impacted my life in so many ways. I loved his stories. The fact that he spoke and lived with such character. He stood for what he believed and wasn't afraid to stand for what was right. He was a true man in every sense of
The word. Heaven rejoices in his coming home I know. He is and always will be missed.

In memory of my PawPaw
Death makes us feel and learn many things and death of specific persons can make us feel/learn even more. I pray that your sweet soul is rejoicing with the angels and thank you for your life and your death and all you have taught me.
To the man who taught me what hard work looks like... you worked tirelessly to provide for your family and you would stand for hours on your feet as a pharmacist...even when we were in the comfort of your home you were often standing so others could sit. It may have been a simple gesture and maybe one you didn't think about too much. Maybe you were more comfortable standing but I was watching you and looking up to you and learning about putting others first. Thank you for teaching me to be selfless and to value a hard days work.
To the man who taught me how to choose... when we would visit you, you would often remark "Boys lie, you better watch those boys." And in a very simple way I knew you were telling me that I was beautiful in every way and had to choose carefully which man I would share my life with. On October 24, 2015 I chose very wisely. And we both laughed saying "Boys lie... except when they're named Philip." You taught my dad how to be the amazing man he is today. You taught my dad to always get the car door for my mom and I was always watching, learning the type of love and respect I deserved. Thank you for teaching me what true love looks like by the way you loved Grammy, for affectionately calling your wife, "doll" and for helping me to choose an amazing man to call my husband.
To the man who taught me about love... I am so proud of our family and the family that you built. Throughout these years and especially recently as you slowly slipped away from us, family was always there. You were surrounded with love through this whole process and I pray that you felt it immensely. I watched as my parents lovingly never left your side and your children took great care of you in the tender moments of your passing. I was watching and learning. Thank you for teaching me how to love and how to be there for the ones you love.
I love you my sweet PawPaw, Philip George Wingerter II, one of the most amazing men to grace this earth. May your sweet soul find eternal peace.

Our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Wingerter and all the family. Mr. Phil was such a good man and a wonderful Pharmacist we trusted and loved. It was always a joy to talk to Mr. Phil in Winn Dixie. I remember how Mrs. Wingerter worked in the Medicine Shoppe with Mr. Phil and she was always so pleasant and calm. Mr. Phil was such a devoted Pharmacist and tried everyway possible to help you. One day he told me the story of when he was a little boy in New Orleans and my Grandma Barattini would see him playing outside and call him to come in and get some of the cream cheese she had made. He said it was so good. I loved hearing that story since my Grandmother died before I was born so I never got to meet her. When I heard the sad news of Mr. Phil's passing, I thought about how he and my Grandmother were together and that maybe she was feeding him some of her homemade cream cheese. Praying for all of you during this most difficult time!
