R. Koch Jr. Obituary

Robert Joshua Koch, Jr. of New Orleans died peacefully at home of cancer on August 2, 2024. Josh was born on December 24, 1953, in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, to Marguerite (Margot) de la Houssaye Koch and General Robert Joshua Koch. As the son of an Army officer, Josh and his five younger siblings lived all over the world. No matter where they lived, the family always found a place to sail together. When the Vietnam War began, the family was stationed in Hawaii, where they spent the longest assignment of their military life. For four years, Josh and his siblings lived in the Pacific Ocean, sailing, surfing, and swimming. Josh attended Bullis School in Maryland and graduated from the University of Oklahoma. When his father retired from the Army and settled outside of New Orleans in Covington, LA, Josh enrolled in Tulane Law School in 1975. He began his law career in New Orleans at various firms before starting his own practice in 1995. Josh adored his clients and loved guiding them through difficult times, many of whom became his friends. In 1995, Josh's hectic bachelor life turned upside down when he met Claire Noe on a blind date arranged by a friend. Sparks flew the moment Claire opened her front door. The couple married in 1997 and welcomed their precious daughter, Margot Jane, in 1998. Josh loved being a father and considered parenthood the ultimate privilege in life. Living in New Orleans allowed Josh to pursue his other passion: sailing. He enjoyed competitive racing on Saga, Decision, and Hawke, and later took to recreational sailing in Lake Pontchartrain with Claire and Margot on their boat, Exuberance. A man of boundless energy, he also competed in triathlons, a pursuit his wife never quite understood. Josh believed he must have run around Audubon Park no fewer than a million times. Cashiers, North Carolina, was another happy place for Josh and his family, where they loved hiking, growing dahlias, and enjoying the mountains with their Doberman Pinschers. Greece was also a cherished place for Josh, where he visited for the last time just three weeks before his death. He was determined to see the Aegean Sea one last time and spend time with his closest friends. Josh will be remembered for his kind demeanor, adventurous spirit, lighthearted and sometimes silly personality, determination, brilliant mind, and extremely handsome face. He lived by the words: "Do the right thing, the good thing, the kind and remarkable thing, for you may not get another chance." Josh is survived by his wife Claire, his daughter Margot, his dear mother Margot, and his siblings: Chris (Sara), Marguerite (Mike), Roy (Laura), and Lei (Ricky), along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his father, Brigadier General Robert J. Koch, and his brother, Beau Koch. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at the Southern Yacht Club at noon followed by a reception. Visitation will begin at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the HeartGift Foundation of Louisiana in his honor. www.heartgift.org

Hi Claire. We are sorry to hear about Josh's passing. I was trying to connect to see if both of you wanted to go on a Viking river cruise with us in 2026. Josh and I were good friends at the Bullis High School for 9th - 12th grade and he was a bunch of fun. He will be missed.

I just learned of Josh´s passing. I am a lawyer, 19 days older than Josh, and got to know him through many cases we had together over the years. He was an honorable and good lawyer and person. I am sad to learn of his passing, and offer my prayers and condolences to his family.

Back in the early nineties, I and three others were hired to do a fashion spread for Gambit. The producers told us they purposely chose actors rather than models for the job. Three of us were actors. Josh was a lawyer, but he looked like a model, and he thereby elevated the whole group. He was friendly, bright, and funny. I liked him immediately.
Imagine my delight when the next time I encountered Josh, he was on a date with my friend Claire Noe. Claire´s beauty was equaled by her charm and rapier wit. What a wonderful match!
My condolences at this sad time.

Josh was a fabulous core member of the Tulane Law School Trial Advocacy Program, where he taught law students how to try cases. He was a great teacher and wonderful mentor to the students. We will miss him.

I´m so sorry for your loss. I am praying for you all. May God give you comfort during this very difficult time. Please know that your loved one is safe in God´s memory (Proverbs 14:14,15). Just as God brought his son Jesus Christ back to life, he will do the same for your loved one as he has promised.

I was saddened to read about Josh. He handled a few property cases for us (and that I referred to him) after Ida and was so efficient, personable, and reliable that we hit it off. Although we weren't social friends, I did consider him a friend, he just gravitated into that category. I am very sorry for his family and wide array of friends. I would like to share a little poem almost written for Josh, let me know where to send by email. Sherene and Marc Dahlman

I am so so sorry. I have not seen Josh very much in the past few years.

I've known Josh for years. I have always known him to be thoughtful, funny, kind, to be good company, and to be aware of others in a lovely well mannered way. He will be missed.

My memories of Josh are many, but the first was when I backed into his car as a newlywed on State St! He was so calm about it! After that, he and Margo would shop at Perlis on Saturday and the world was her oyster; I had so much fun helping them select clothes! Margo out grew the department, but Josh would come to shop or need something altered and he always stopped to visit and fill me in on Margo and Claire´s whereabouts.
His infectious smile is radiatingk heaven and surely he has found a boat to sail on the waters peace!
Blessings and love to Claire and Margot

We fired our precious times with josh and Claire - by precious I mean too few hours! But in that short time, we felt every single characteristic described in his obituary. Nothing was left out. Time is way too short. Thank you for sharing such a marvelous reminder to Do what's Right while we are on this earth We love you Claire and Margot. GA and Teak

I´m truly saddened by this news. Josh was at times a tough person to work for but he shaped me into the lawyer I am today. I´m very grateful that we were able to reconnect recently on a project. I enjoyed catching up and reminiscing on old times. I´m so glad he got to go to Greece. Claire - you and Margot were the twinkles in his eye. Love, Cynthia
