Russell Munster Obituary

Russell Louis Munster Jr. passed away peacefully at home in Jefferson, LA on May 11, 2022 at the age of 77. He was born on February 17, 1945 in New Orleans. He lived most of his life Uptown near the river, in a time where Cats & Frats ruled the streets, and neighbors gathered in corner grocery stores, churches, playgrounds, and bars. He met his lifetime love there, Jinx, the feisty little Madisonville girl who stole his heart early and then loved him fiercely for the rest of his life. Russell loved everything about New Orleans: its color, its sounds, and its unmistakable character. He marched with the Lyons Club for many years, proudly wearing the most gorgeous costumes full of feathers and sequins. He painstakingly renovated their Uptown home, taking years to complete it, preserving and restoring every detail. Someday, someone will (again) renovate 818 Jena Street, and tear down the original early-1900s brick fireplace to find a time capsule from 1984. A snapshot of a family who worked hard & played hard, loved and laughed, and held each other tight. Hopefully they'll be playing the Blues when they do it. Russell is a retiree of the International Union of Elevator Constructors. He was a graduate of Fortier High School, a lifelong learner who researched everything there was to know about his varied interests: animals, history, architecture, and art. He was a quiet man who preferred to hear other people's stories, rather than telling his own. Russell is survived by Jinx, his wife of 57 years, as well as their children: Rhonda Munster Ladner (Donald "Randy") and Russell "Rusty" Louis Munster III. He was adored by his grandchildren: Alexis Sanborn (Brett), Zachary Ladner (Kasey) & Jackson Ladner (Gabrielle), Madelynn Munster, and Mackenzie Munster. He had one great grandchild Giavanna, and a baby boy Liam on the way. He is also survived by 2 siblings: Terry Munster (Sande) and Janet Allison (Kevin), and was preceded in death by his parents Russell Louis Munster Sr. and Olga Frye Munster, as well as his sister Roslyn Munster Falk (Mike). He was blessed with a large extended family spanning multiple generations, including friends-like-family, who he cherished. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Sunday, May 22 from 1 pm-4 pm at Southport Hall, 200 Monticello Ave., New Orleans, LA 70121. Russell delighted in the educations and careers of his children and grandchildren, so for anyone wishing to express sympathy via donation in his name, please consider supporting Make-A-Wish of Middle TN at https://wish.org/midtn.

Jinx, I did not know your wonderful husband but he sounds like he was great and well loved. Being a Madisonville girl myself I remember fondly our carefree days there & your family as young children. My prayers will be with you and your loved ones in this time of sorrow. Gail Goldate Valenti
