Ms. Marlene, Louie, Karen, and Lauren,

I just learned of Mr. Sterling's passing and to say the least was deeply saddened by the news. I have such fond memories of time I spent with your family and have always had a great deal of respect for all of you. I remeber fondly the trip to Alabama when LSU beat The Bear, nights spent at your house making pizza and playing the computer, and of course, going to LSU games in Tiger Stadium. I think about you all often and will keep you all in my prayers.

All my love and deepest sympathy,

WHERE DO I START? I HAVE WAITED TILL NOW CAUSE I DIDN'T THINK I COULD GET THROUGH THIS. I HAVE TRIED BY PRAYING BEFORE AND AFTER STERLING WENT TO SEE GOD AND TIGER STADIUM NORTH BUT I GUESS THINGS MUST GO ON. STERLING WAS SUCH A GOOD FRIEND (YOU GUYS TOO OF COURSE) THAT ANYTHING LSU JUST DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE THE SAME OOMPH AS IT DID WHEN WE WOULD SPEAK. ESPECIALLY WHEN IT CAME TO "TOOLAME" BASEBALL OR RABBI BERTMAN THE JEWISH AD. I KNOW YOU HAVE MANY FOND MEMORIES BUT ONE WILL ALWAYS STAY WITH ME AND THAT WAS THE GREAT DAY WE SPENT BEFORE THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. KATHIE & I'S FRIENDS CLARK AND DANI THAT OWNED TOPPERS WHERE WE ALL MET COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT WE COULD TOTALLY EAT AND DRINK THEM EMPTY IN ONE DAY. THE PATIO WAS OUR "SPECIAL SECRET" EXECPT FOR CLOSE FRIENDS (IN THE HUNDREDS). I ALSO FOUND OUT LATER THAT STERLING HAD "MORE" FUN AT THE TAILGATE PARTY OF THE GREAT RAGU AFTER WE ALL LEFT TOPPERS. WHAT A GREAT LSU DAY.

YOU KNOW BY NOW THAT KATHIE & I WOULD DO ANYTHING WE CAN TO HELP YOU AND THE KIDS GET PAST THIS TUFF TIME SO DON'T FORGET OUR NUMBERS.

Marlene, we were so sorry to hear of Sterling's passing. Our hearts and prayers are with you and your family. Sterling was such a wonderful guy. He always sent us emails and we enjoyed keeping in touch. Of course, the first time we met Sterling was through LSU Baseball. Back when Prodigy was the about the only internet access, our daughter, Sheree, would post the baseball game results after each game. So many LSU fans nationwide would read her updates and send messages. Sterling contacted Sheree and told her he really liked her updates. Then we met Sterling at one of the games. Since that time he would always let us know about tickets for any of the LSU games at Zephyr field and we would also meet up with all of you in Omaha. He touched our lives and we are blessed for it.

Marlene, my heartfelt condolences go out to you and the family. Sterling was a good man and well respected by the marine industry. There were customers that would not do business with anyone else but Sterling. I know, we tried (unsuccessfully) to "steal" a couple of his customers back "in the day". The respect his customers had for him is a credit to his honesty and loyalty and to always do what was right in business and in life.
I used to love visiting the repair group he was part of at the Westwego and Algiers yards. He was laid back to a degree that I always came away from a visit vowing to be more like that myself but I never could.
You are in my thoughts and prayers today!

Dear Marlene and Family,

We met through LSU baseball, and although we did not see you or the kids often, we did see Sterling when he would come to visit in section D. But, my fondest memories of Sterling were the frequent e-mails he would send keeping us abreast of LSU sports. As for my favorite Sterling story, it was when my sister-in-law and her husband were moving to Metairie last year and I asked him if he knew of the best neighborhoods and/or realtors to check there. He sent us information complete with details in a matter of moments. He also offered our relatives a place to stay overnight if they needed one, while they searched for a home. That was Sterling. No question unanswered and no detail unknown. We know you will miss him but you also must know how many lives he touched through his beloved LSU sports, and touched in a manner that had nothing to do with sports. God bless you all.

Marlene and family- My memories of Sterling are one of family- his immediate family and how he enjoyed them whenever they were together @ LSU football and baseball games, and his extended family that I was honored to be part of at LSU events. He created love and respect, that was indeed contagious. Marlene has asked we post "Sterling stories" so here goes. The week after Hurricane Katrina, I needed to borrow a truck to go buy mattresses. Sterling and I were both in B.R. and staying near each other. Of course Sterling let me borrow his truck. In between trips to the store I filled the truck up with gas. When I gave the truck back to Sterling he noticed the tank was full and asked me, did I write the mileage down. The look on his face when I told him no was priceless to an unorganized person like myself. I beleive it was the first time the mileage had not been checked in his truck. This "Sterling Story" shows Sterling at his best, generous in lending the truck and meticulous in his attention to detail. He will truly be missed by both his family and extended family. God Bless.

Dear
Marlene, Louie, Karen, Lauren, Buzz and Maude,
Words cannot express how
I feel. I have lost a friend and fellow Tiger. If I have to pick out one
thing to write about, it would be the how we expanded LSU's academic recruiting
in New Orleans. What started out as simple home receptions, evolved into
full fledged receptions with invitations to all prospective students from
New Orleans. Millie Guichard was a part of this idea as well, but it was
Sterling who worked tirelessly to make it happen. He was the one that contacted
LSU and worked all of his contacts to make it happen. Numbers went from a
handful to hundreds. This is something of which I am sure he was proud.

There are lots of other memories, but this one is something near and dear
to my heart. I will miss him, and have a difficult time with the reality
of it all.
My deepest sympathies to all of you.

Karen, Ms. Marlene, Louis, Lauren, Buzz & Maude, "Aunt Diane" & Family:
Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I cannot think back on my LSU years with Karen without thinking about Mr. Sterling. For every sporting event we went to, we always had to go find Mr. Sterling wherever he was on campus: tailgating before football games, in the Union after the games, outside The Box for baseball, etc. What would an LSU game have been without him there?? I can't even imagine. His love for his family and LSU was contagious. When I was around him I couldn't help loving LSU just a little bit more. Every time I saw him, there was a smile and some sort of joke or sarcastic remark. He had a very unique sense of humor which I will greatly miss.
All my love,
Julie Mallory

Marlene and Family
Please accept our sincere condolences on the loss of Sterling. We will miss him as the LSU guy who sat behind us in the North End Zone of Tiger Stadium for many years. We've seen our daughter go through LSU and have observed your youngest daughter on that path also. Sterling was a true fan in every sense of the word and will be missed greatly. Peace to you and your family.

Ms. Marlene, Louie, Lauren, Karen, and Family:

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Mr. Sterling's passing. I regret that I found out in such a tardy manner. He was always enjoyable to be around and was a true Tiger. My memories span from my early years and the trip to Bama when we stayed in the log cabin, to my years in college when he would always greet or wave to me from the stands when I would leave the dugout at the Box, to the few times I saw him since I graduated. There will be a void at all LSU athletic events with out him there, but we all know he will be watching from the best seat possible. May God Bless you all thru your grieving and healing process.

Your Friend Always,

Marlene, I just learned of Sterling's death and I am simply stunned. Please accept my deepest sympathy for you and your family. I thank God for the many memories Sterling and I shared from the crazy times at the Westwego yard to the Mark Twain Club. Sterling was such a genuine, positive individual, always ready to help anybody at any time. I feel so fortunate to have known him and to have called him my friend. He will be remembered fondly.

Sterling had the best, sarcastic sense of humor! However, my favorite story about him concerns the first time he introduced me to his Father. It was at an LSU baseball game, of course. Sterling walked up to me and said, "Steve, this is my DAD!" There was so much pride in his voice, and the look in his Dad's eyes was amazing. This was two men who loved and respected each other.

Marlene and family,

I just learned of Sterling's passing. It really came as a shock to Adele and I. Our prayers are with you and your family.

I have many fond memories of Sterling during our years at LSU. We grew up together as entering freshmen living in Pentagon Dorm. Many times I had caught rides back to LSU from the Westbank in his VW. Sterling was the first one of our group to get an apartment and we had plenty of good times with the great after game parties. I will miss his wit and fun loving personality. I am going to miss not seeing Sterling this year at the Tiger baseball games and this fall in the North End Zone of Tiger Stadium. He was one of the last links to my past (the good years at LSU).

Our prayers and thoughts are with you.

Courtney Lemoine

January 7, 2007

Mr. Sterling would always cook the most delicious fish. I would mark my calendar in advance when I would find out he was going fishing because that meant a full tummy when he got back home! He would always make fun of me b/c he knew I was constantly hungry. When I would come over he would tell me,"Court, go in the kitchen. We still have fish. We left a full plate for you. I know you're going to eat it." And when I would finish, he would tell me to go back in there and keep eating. He always had a good sense of humor about everything. He was an incredible man and father, and will be missed greatly.

Mel and I danced together at LSU, and I can well remember her "Paren" visiting us at the games! He seemed like such a great Tiger fan and always appeared to be so proud that Mel was a part of the game-day tradition. She recenty told me about his passing, and I am so sorry to hear the news. I certainly will keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

Sorry this long - too much I want to say - I so enjoyed tailgating with Sterling as well as the other Tementos at the LSU games. He was always pleasant - unless he was talking about Tulane and on occasion $kip Bertman as AD (not baseall coach). These two things really got him fired up. (Oh how I wish I could talk to him about $aban being at Bama!!!!) I found it quite entertaining-being a Tiger fanatic as well.
Aside from socializing at all the Tiger games over the past few years, one of my most memorable events with Sterling came on an evening following a baseball game in BR when my family and his went to dinner at the Chimes. We had shared stories, jokes, prayers, etc.. over e-mails frequently and at tailgate parties, but this really was one of the few times I got to really sit and talk with Sterling - not surrounded by tailgaters. I'm glad I had that opportunity. I will treasure the memories always. I knew that Sterling liked Excel sheets because he assigned our baseball seats at the Wally Pontiff Classic and would send us a copy of seat assignments. What I learned that evening at the Chimes was that he also kept an excel sheet of what food he had in the freezer. Being somewhat unorganized, this truly amazed me.I just couldn't even imagine any one doing this. Lauren and Marlene informed me it was indeed true! WOW!
I also want to add that following Katrina, he really helped lift my spirits as did Marlene. They emailed me often and offered an open invitation to their home. I will never forget this gesture. It truly touched me. I was also touched by his relationship with his parents - just beautiful. I know Papa Sterling will miss him greatly. He told me Sterling was his best freind!
One last thing I want to mention, Sterling got me (tricked me) into trying alligator twice - my first and last time! He was a great friend and a pleasure to be around. He will be missed greatly by many.

I will always remember the good times we had together fishing at Chauvin and Leeville, being together at home games and out of town games watching Tiger Football and Baseball. Also, going to Starkville with Al and Carolyn to watch the Tigers whip Miss. St. in the rain. Steve Campo and Gwen Pine.

I'll never forget how Mr. Sterling always made fun of my jeans that had holes at the knees. Everytime I would wear them he would always tell me, "What happened to your jeans. Did you fall down." He was always cracking jokes and making people laugh. We had a lot of fun with him at LSU tailgates and I will never forgot those memories. He will always hold a dear place in all of our hearts.

To the entire Temento Family:
All of you remain in my thoughts and prayers. Sterling was a very good, loyal friend. He fit in that "they broke the mold" category. Although we drifted apart and went our separate ways for many of our later years, I always cherished our friendship and will continue to hold many fond memories of that friendship. There are too many to list here, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention some: being asked to be Louie's "Paren'", his signature vehicle during the college days - the old VW, "looking out" for my sister, Faye at LSU when I was in the Service, the "stops" at my parents' house in Marrero and the relationship he had with my Dad and the meatballs and spaghetti, the many "FLIGHTS" to and from Baton Rouge and the sometimes "missed" turn in Baton Rouge that landed us at USL in Lafayette to visit our good friend, Bob Bonhage, the intramural softball team he managed at LSU, the Morphy Street Mullets, that one special LSU JV baseball game when he led a bunch of his friends from the Pentagon Dorm and the entire stands in a chant to put me in the game, Cusimano's on Prytania St.,the First Man on the Moon party, and the LSU away game parties at his parents' home in Westwego, the Pentagon dorm and watching Pistol Pete in the Cow Palace, the first apt. in Westwego after marrying Marlene, and the house on Roosevelt St. The list goes on. Sterling has truly left a void in our lives, bigger for some than others, but he certainly will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Goodbye my good friend, you fought the good fight -but then no one expected less than that from you.

"Paren" will always live within us in spirit. ~His Goddaughter
