Teresa Torkanowsky Obituary

Spanish Flamenco dancer Teresa Torkanowsky died peacefully in New Orleans, at the home of her son, musician David Torkanowsky, on Saturday, February 27. She was born on August 9, 1926 and became an early traveler to America when Her father, Rafael Viera founded the historic La Prensa Hispanic newspaper in New York City, and because the family spent time in both Madrid and New York, Teresa studied Spanish dance from an early age. While in New York at the age of 16, Teresa mingled with the variety of Spanish talent in New York-the likes of La Argentinita, Pilar López, José Greco, Rosario & Antonio, and Carmen Amaya, as well as guitarists Sabicas, Jeronimo Villarino and Carlos Montoya. When nightclub and movie dancers Rosario & Antonio were preparing for their debut concert at Carnegie Hall, a 16-year-old Teresa was contracted to dance in their company. "Most dancers want their careers to end with a concert at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate my career started at Carnegie Hall," she recalled. Mexican-born Spanish dancer Luisillo Pérez Dávila (1928–2007) was appearing with his dance partner in Michael Todd's Mexican Hayride at the Winter Garden Theatre. The production choreographer was ballet dancer Paul Haakon. When Luisillo's partner decided to marry, he called on friend Antonio to help him find a new one. Teresa Viera Romero fit all of the requirements, and at the completion of her Carnegie Hall concert, she became half of Teresa and Luisillo. Both left for Mexico City to dance at the El Patio Nightclub, and soon after were awarded a contract to dance in Brazil and Argentina. While in Argentina, they crossed paths with friend Carmen Amaya, and she in turn invited them to join her company. For the next two-plus years, the couple toured with Amaya within Europe, to great acclaim. By 1950, now married, Teresa and Luisillo formed their own company and one year later they made their debut at the Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt in Paris and the Theatre Royal in England. After this, they were awarded a contract to tour all of Latin America. In 1954–55 and 1955–56, the Teresa and Luisillo Ballets Espagnol appeared at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York, followed with transcontinental tours of the U.S. After 15 years of international tours, and a daughter, Maria, the relationship ended. Teresa eventually married the orchestra conductor Werner Torkanowsky (1926–1992), who became maestro of the New Orleans Philharmonic Orchestra. Teresa organized her own company and danced occasionally with the late American Spanish dancer Luis Olivares. "She was a beautiful dancer," recalled Olivares. "She knew the complete school of Spanish dance." In 1963 she and family moved to New Orleans where she started a flamenco movement that was successfully vibrant and still continues strong to this day. She loved her summers at her seaside home in Hancock Maine and there she she started the dance department at University of Maine for 13 years before retiring in 1994. In 1998, she decided that New Orleans was calling her name and heeded that call. She got re-involved with the New Orleans scene. She experienced hurricane Katrina and it's recovery. She is survived by her children, David Torkanowsky and Maria Pérez Warren, two grandchildren, Sean and Chad Warren, and six great grandchildren, Ashanti, Amman, Ever, Àngel, Lily, and Aurora.

the memory of my Flamenco classes with Teresa continues to inspire me. The other day I was invited to take some Flamenco classes here in Salt Lake City. I am looking into starting to do it again...Even though it i 33 years since I took the class, I love dance and remember how fond I was of the classes with Teresa. How coincidental that I was invited to this class-it happened around the celebration of Teresa's life. Angels are among us, I know it. Thank you for this gift from above. Thank you for touching my life. You are remembered

I started my Spanish dance career with Teresa in New Orleans in the early 70s. She was a beautiful dancer and very kind. When I moved back to New York she recommended me to Mariquita Flores, with whom I studied for 15 years. Another great dancer! It amazes me what a role Spanish dance-- and these two women-- have had in my life! I have been very lucky!

My condolensces to Teresa´s family and friends. As an unlikely flamenco student (beginner and intermediate semesters) at University of Maine she transformed me into a fan of flamenco and a better dancer. She also taught us jazz (beginner and intermediate). Her enthusiasm and humor made classes very enjoyable. Her dance techniques were always infused over the decades. Viking is sponsoring a flamenco diiner abd performance in Spain on our cruise. It made me think of Teresa with warmth in my heart. God bless Teresa.

I was one of her students, 1981-1985 UMaine (UMO. then). She introduced me to the beautiful world of dance, especially flamenco. Some of my favorite memories from college were her classes and traveling the state performing. She was a great teacher, beautiful, almost mystical to me. I have always been so grateful to her. I wish I could have told her. She gave me the vision that I could have dance in my life. At 60 years old I am still dancing. Percussive dance is still my favorite. Thank you. RIP

I still Think of Theresa and how she touched my life at UMaine. I was not the best dancer in her class but I tried my best. I can remember her cheering me on. Once she wrote me a beautiful letter when I was 20 years old-this was after one semester in her class. Her words stuck with me- she was recognizing how dedicated , committed and positive I was and urged me to continue to do things that made me happy. Her words still inspire me and I still love dancing.

I was lucky enough to have danced and learned flamenco at Umaine in 1990 under Teresa's guidance and faith in me. She was amazing and inspired me. Later on in life I taught dance and took more lessons and became a dual language teacher of children. I was blessed to have her touch my life and believe in me.

Loved her group's performances @ Jazz Fest. I got hooked on flamenco years ago after traveling to Spain and Teresa's showcase was an event I always cherished.

Teresa and my mother(Evelyn) were best friends; we both took her classes when she was teaching on Iberville St. over an oyster restaurant. Later, I accompanied her class playing Bach Inventions on piano to flamenco dance, an interesting fusion. She visited my mother in Marco Island, Fla. when my mother retired there. She continued to visit my mother when I had to bring her back to New Orleans due to her health... a true friend. I have so many memories of her and cherish those years learning flamenco.

Sad news of the death of my flamenco teacher/dance mentor Teresa Romero Torkanowsky. It was my joy to study with her, my joy to be a member of her company, my joy to have her as a close friend. She rescued me with flamenco and I will always be grateful. Teresa let me take class for free because she not only knew my mother couldn’t afford them, but she saw a talent in me that was otherwise untapped. What I earned in the Company paid for my college tuition, books, and sorority bills. I loved her so much and greatly admired her as an artist and teacher. I am so glad that Jean and I were able to visit with her once a week over the last few years. “Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of His faithful ones.”
