Vlajko Kocic Obituary

Dr. Vlajko Kocic, 70, of Metairie, LA, passed away on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Belgrade, Serbia, on April 10, 1953, Dr. Kocic was the son of the late Ljubomir and Nadezda-Nada Kocic. As a child, he showed an early interest, talent, and love for mathematics. In 1972, he graduated from the Mathematical Grammar School, a selective school for especially gifted and talented students in mathematics, physics, and informatics. At the University of Belgrade, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (1977), his Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics (1979), and his Doctorate of Mathematical Sciences (1981). In July 1977, he married his wife, Paulina Kocic, and in September of that year he began his prolific career in teaching. Initially, he taught at the University of Belgrade (from 1977 to 1990), but he then continued at the University of Rhode Island (from 1990 to 1994), until joining the faculty at Xavier University of Louisiana, from 1994 to 2024. Dr. Kocic loved to teach. He dedicated his time, knowledge and friendship selflessly to others for more than 47 years. Many former students remember him not only as their professor but as a mentor who guided them through their academic journeys and on to their professional endeavors and personal lives. His kindness, warmth, patience, and keen sense of humor created a welcoming atmosphere for all who had the privilege of knowing him and learning from him. As a passionate mathematician, he also devoted a significant portion of his life working on mathematical challenges and research. He authored numerous publications and papers, as well as delivered lectures at professional meetings and universities in different countries throughout the world. At Xavier, he was appointed a Keller Family Professor in 2005 and also served as Chair of the Department of Mathematics for over six years. An active member of the American Mathematical Society, Dr. Kocic is also nationally and internationally recognized for his distinguished academic achievements in mathematics. Beyond his scholarly achievements, Dr. Kocic was also passionate about cooking. As a very talented chef, he enjoyed preparing elaborate, delicious meals and hosting dinners filled with unforgettable friendship, sharing stories and spreading joy. He was also a member of the Gourmet Newcomers Club of New Orleans for more than 30 years. Dr. Kocic is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Paulina Kocic; his two sons, Nikola and wife Lauren Kocic, and Ljubomir-Lubo Kocic; two grandchildren Bella and Maximus; his Mother-in-law, Ljiljana Piskulic, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. On Saturday, March 9, 2024, a public visitation will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 PM at St. Basil Orthodox Church immediately followed by a memorial service. Interment will be held in Belgrade, Serbia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent in the memory of Dr. Kocic to St. Basil Orthodox Church at 3916 Hudson Street, Metairie, LA 70006. Paulina,
My deepest sympathyto you and your family at this difficult time. Dr. Kocic was very supportive of the math program at GK and to me personally. He was a mentor, humble, affable, always willing to give a hand when needed, even going to a Mu Alpha Theta convention as a chaperon (just, high school kids!).
I also had the pleasure of enjoying his gastronomic delights during the St Nicholas Kocic open house. Nothing but pleasant memories.

Farewell, our dear friend. We had joy, we had fun, many years of friendship with too many years separated by the circumstances that pushed us to leave Belgrade. But we managed to get together again, and everything was just like before. We were looking forward to summers in Belgrade, where we would try to catch up on the time we were apart. You left us much too early. You were a brilliant mathematician, you loved music, and you loved art. And you loved being with people, friends, family. Parties in your house to which everyone was invited marked our schooldays. You will live in our memories until the end of our days. Our heartfelt sympathy and sincere condolences to the whole family, deeply shaken, Jelica and Ranko
