Joan Elaine Bergquist

Joan Elaine Bergquist, age 89, of Bountiful, UT, formerly of Council Bluffs, died August 13, 2024, after a long bout with dementia.

Joan was born September 20, 1934, in Council Bluffs, to Donald C. and Edith B. (Galloway) Stevens. The family lived in several locations in Council Bluffs, and for a short time in Loveland, CO, finally moving to a permanent home in Council Bluffs in 1951 when Joan was in High School. She attended Abraham Lincoln High School, graduating in 1952, along with many of her lifelong friends.

After graduating, Joan worked for Breeder's Supply Company as a secretary, where she met her future husband, Reuben. They both lived on Orchard Avenue, and Reuben gave her rides to work everyday, where they struck up a friendship that turned into a romance, much to her parents' consternation, as Reuben was 26 years her senior. Nonetheless, Reuben and Joan were married October 2, 1957. After honeymooning in New Orleans, LA, they found that Joan was pregnant with their first child, Brian. Two months after Brian was born Joan was pregnant again with their second son, Tim.

After Breeder's Supply Company closed in the 1970s, Joan went to work for Council Bluffs Savings Bank as a teller. She quickly worked her way up the secretarial ranks, finishing her career as Secretary to the Branch President of the bank. She made many lifelong friends during her banking career.

After developing dementia, Joan moved to Creekside Senior Living in Bountiful, in 2019 to be closer to family. While at Creekside, Joan was loved for her smile and laughter. The family is grateful to the amazing staff that took care of her for over five years.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben (1990); and her oldest son, Brian (1998).

She is survived by Timothy (Christine) Bergquist of Bountifu; and grandsons, Douglas Bergquist of Bountiful, and Dr. Andrew Bergquist of Colorado Springs, CO.

Services will be at Cutler-O'Neill Funeral Home, at 545 Willow Avenue in Council Bluffs on August 31, 2024, at 11 a.m., (10 a.m. mountain time).
