If you knew Mike, you knew the following to be true about him. He loved his family, his dog, hunting, and any low brow humor. He also was highly competitive, and almost hated losing as much as he hated the Nebraska Corn-Shitters.

Mike was the sixth born of eight kids, and if you know anything about his family you know they were as much fun as they were trouble. Mike grew up in Council Bluffs and attended St. Albert High School where he met the love of his life Kim. Mike's competitive spirit took him to UNO where he played football and ran track.

After college he married Kim and started a family. Mike held a variety of jobs and raced bikes until he found his place with the Council Bluffs Fire Department. Mike enjoyed the comradery, competition, and the lifestyle the fire department offered. On his off days he could be found working his side job painting or hunting with his brothers. Over his 25 year career with the fire department, he became known for his work ethic, narration of events, his farts, and for making the hard work fun.

Life was grand until a three letter monster, MSA, appeared. As Mike's body began to fade, his competitive spirit paired with Kim's persistence worked in near perfect harmony to keep Mike's world as big as possible. Despite his disease progressing with the help of family and dear friends he was still able to travel to the people and places he loved.

Mike's resilience and humor made him a favorite among all the nurses, PT, OT, speech therapists, Doctors, etcetera that he came into contact with. His and Kim's spirit and strength often left those around them in awe. Even in the end Mike's laugh and smile carried him through. After nearly 10 years of battling MSA, numerous rounds of pneumonia, and sepsis, sweet Judy, this guy never knew when to quit, his body grew weary, and he earned his final rest.

Preceding Mike in death are his parents, Jim and Joyce Gorman; brothers, Edward Gorman and Daniel Gorman.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Kim Gorman; son, Jeff (Stephanie) Gorman; daughter, Allison (Jesse) Nichols; son, Tom (Shayla) Gorman; eight grandchildren, Brayden, Savannah and Leila Gorman, Charlie and Tripp Nichols, Grace, Michael, and Nicholas Gorman; sisters, Colleen (Ron) Thompson and Teresa Gerjevic; brothers, Joe (Cathy) Gorman, Steve (Chris) Gorman and Chuck (Melissa) Gorman; sister-in-law, Geralyn "Geri" Gorman; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Prayer service and remarks, Wednesday, 4 p.m., with visitation to follow until 8 p.m., at Cutler O'Neill Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial, Thursday, 10 a.m., at St. Peter Catholic Church. A luncheon will immediately follow at Kottas Hall.

If you feel so obligated to honor Mike's memory, memorials are suggested to Council Bluffs Fire Department, St. Albert Catholic Schools, or family choices.

Mike's wife Kim, his three children, 8 grandchildren, brothers, sisters, and numerous friends will miss him dearly. Mike wasn't much for tears and would have by now given us some sage advice, such as soaking our socks in vinegar to keep the ants from getting our candied asses.
