Archibald Coolidge Obituary

COOLIDGE, Archibald Cary Archibald Cary Coolidge, educator, died on Sunday, February 6, 2005) in his apartment in Essex. He was 99. He began his teaching career as an instructor in the English Department at Harvard University in 1929 before moving to the Hotchkiss School, Lakeville, where he taught from 1930 to 1950, serving in the Navy as a Lt. Commander from 1942-45. He was headmaster of the Manlius School, Manlius, NY from 1950 - 1952, Executive Director of the English Speaking Union, Manhattan, from 1952 - 1958, and an executive with Steuben Glass, Manhattan, prior to teaching at the Landon School, in Bethesda, MD until his retirement. Mr. Coolidge spent the summer months at his camp on Squam Lake in Sandwich, NH. Archibald Cary Coolidge was born in Cambrigde, MA, received his A.B. from Harvard in 1927, his B.Lit. from Oxford in 1929, and his Ph.D. from Trinity College, Dublin in 1937. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan Jennings, and is survived by their four children, Archibald C. Coolidge, Jr. of Iowa City, IA, Susan B. Battle of Hillsborough, NC, Julian L. Coolidge of Simsbury, Elizabeth C. Miller of Waltham, MA and by 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Mr. Coolidge is also survived by his present wife, Olivia of Essex. Funeral arrangements will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Squam Lake Conservation Society, P.O. Box 606, Holderness, NH, 03245. The Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main St., Centerbrook is in charge of his arrangements.
