I met this wonderful woman at a campground where her family has spent many pleasant summer days. We met because of a shared concern over ownerless cats that live at campgrounds because the original owners failed to neuter their fur-babies, or because people dropped off cats they didn't know what to do with when all local shelters were full. Beverly joined in a rescue effort at the campground, helping to trap and get many cats spayed or neutered to reduce the population, sometimes against protesters who didn't see the point. She also adopted several cats who came to snuggle with her there and at her NJ home.
Funny, feisty, and truly full of love for family, she also loved to see the flowers she planted come into bloom. Her outdoor grilling perfumed the neighboring sites. And, with the rest of her family, she enjoyed NASCAR races. It was so easy to spend much more time with Beverly than I, on a given day, meant to, precisely because of her special charm.
When I heard that Beverly had transferred to the next realm, I just could not accept it. The news just couldn't be true, because I simply felt her, saw her, any time her name came to mind, any time I saw it on a Contact list. I did set a sympathy card out on my desk for her family. . .but I couldn't mail it. To mail it meant I had to admit she was gone. Well then, she isn't, really, because her spirit and image will be in the hearts and memory of many people, and it will be a reminder to laugh at this complicated life. To her family, I say a big Thank You for first introducing her into my heart.
