Catherine Spraker Hamalian

HAMALIAN - Catherine Spraker, 82, died September 14, 2003 at her residence at Piper Shores, a retirement community in Scarborough, ME. Mrs. Hamalian was also a longtime resident of Paramus and Cliffside Park, NJ. Born in Canajoharie, NY, she was the daughter of Livingston and Bessie Tatlock Spraker. She graduated from Canajoharie HS in 1939, and from Wells College in Aurora, NY in 1943. She married Leo Hamalian in 1943 and worked at the University of Rochester Medical School doing research involving the Manhattan Project. Mrs. Hamalian earned a Masters and a Ph.D. from Columbia University and was a Professor of Special Education at Jersey City State College. Catherine Hamalian was a founding member and longtime trustee of the Bergen County, NJ Association for Retarded Citizens, and had published a number of articles in professional journals. Services will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church on October 4, 2003 in Canajoharie, NY. Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Gloversville, NY.
