David Charles Siegfried
Short Hills - David Charles Siegfried, age 78, died peacefully at his home in Short Hills, NJ on February 2, 2021. Born in New York City, he grew up in Madison, NJ.
Dave was widely admired for his keen intellect and integrity. He was a true gentleman and his generosity, kindness, patience, and loyalty took him far in life both personally and professionally. He possessed an avid curiosity and interest in people and places that made him a wonderful conversationalist and a cherished friend to many from a wide variety of backgrounds. Known for his lifetime love of reading, he surrounded himself with books, and, for him, a lively or thoughtful discussion about something he had read was one of life's greatest pleasures.
A summa cum laude graduate of Princeton University, he was a proud member of the Class of '64 and a competitive and committed member of the track team. After graduation and up until the present time, his involvement with Princeton was an important and rewarding part of his life. He served as president of his class, served on numerous university committees and boards, and was the recipient of several significant service awards. Recognizing his commitment, he was chosen to be President of the Alumni Association for the years 2008-2009. His life-long passion for track events also started during this time. He competed in Masters and Senior events throughout his life and received special recognition from the Friends of Princeton Track. As long as his health would allow, he could be found working out at the track several times a week.
He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1967 and after time spent in the NJ National Guard, went on to become a partner in the NY firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley and McCloy where his practice area was International Banking. His career took him to Asia where he was the Partner-in-Charge of the Hong Kong office from 1979-1983 and where he opened and led the Singapore office from 1985-1988. These years were highlights for Dave and his wife, Stephanie, and they savored the exciting travel opportunities and unique cultural experiences that living in Asia offered.
After retirement, Dave gave generously of his time to a number of local organizations. His lifelong passion for history became evident as he served as President of the Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society, served as Vice-Chairman of the Millburn Township Historic Preservation Commission, served as Vice President of Crossroads of the American Revolution, and was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Most recently he found enjoyment in giving talks to local organizations on topics ranging from "The Battle of Springfield" to "The Gilded Age". In 2012 he received the Millburn Township Community Service Award.
He was an active member of Community Congregational Church in Short Hills. He was also a member of the Short Hills Club, Baltusrol Golf Club, and the Hillsboro Club in Hillsboro Beach, FL.
Dave will be deeply missed by his many friends but missed most by his family whom he valued and loved above all else. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Stephanie, a sister Susan Cerciello of West Hartford, CT, 2 daughters, Karin Treadwell of Woodinville, WA, Christine Rampe (Kevin) of New Hope, PA, and 8 grandchildren, David Treadwell, Kate Lawson, Chase Lawson, Christopher Lawson, William Rampe, Matthew Rampe, Lily Rampe, and Emma Rampe.
