Howard Van Dyk

Howard Van Dyk, age 88, of Ridgewood, on Sunday, March 4, 2018. Born and raised in Paterson, Howard had lived most of his life in Hawthorne and Ridgewood. He served his country as a soldier in the U.S. Army. After his service, he owned and operated Van Dyk's Market in Paterson and Howie's Corner Store in Hawthorne. Later, Howard worked as the Director Food Service for the Mahwah Board of Education. Howard was a member of the Hawthorne Gospel Church where he had served as an Administrator and served the church in many other ministries. He had been President of the Church Board, a Sunday School teacher, and Assistant to the Senior Program. He also sang in the choir, taught adult classes and was involved in Vacation Bible School. For 67 years, Howard was the beloved husband of Anna (nee: Van Dyke) Van Dyk. Loving father of Howard Van Dyk, Jr. and his wife Chi Chi of Hawthorne, Ruth Ann Restivo and her husband Nickolas of Fishers, IN, Brenda Bankos and her husband Bill of Ridgewood and Sandra del Aguila and her husband Marcos of Ridgewood. Dear grandfather of Aaron Van Dyk, Tyler Van Dyk, Jared Bankos, Tara Storm and her husband Colin, Brad Bankos and his wife Ashley, Nick Restivo and Olivia del Aguila. Dearest great-grandfather of Ryan, Riley and Elijah. Brother of Donald Van Dyk, Barbara Graves, the late Bill Van Dyk and the late John Vander Hook. A funeral will be held at 10am on Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Ave., Hawthorne. Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hawthorne Christian Academy. (browningforshay.com)
