Jean Wilson Obituary

Dr. Jean T. Wilson, 88, of Little Falls, formerly of Montclair, died on Friday, March 23.

Born in Belleville, Dr. Wilson lived in Montclair for 21 years and North Caldwell for 21 years before moving to Little Falls in 1997.

In 1952, Dr. Wilson graduated from N.Y. State Veterinary School at Cornell University, and in 1955, he joined the Doremus Animal Hospital in Cedar Grove. The practice later became Cedar Grove Animal Hospital. He had Dr. Stanley A. Witzel as a partner until Dr. Witzel's retirement, after which his partner in the practice became Dr. Jean T. Wilson Jr. Dr. Wilson Sr. retired in 2008 after 53 years.

During his career, Dr. Wilson offered veterinary care and puppy-raising training to the members of the local 4-H, who raised puppies for Seeing Eye Inc.

A member of the Dapper Dans of Harmony, Montclair Chapter, for more than 37 years, Dr. Wilson sang with his fellow "Barbershoppers" in annual shows and charitable events. He was a Scout Master for 27 years with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 99, Eagle Rock Council. He was also an avid gardener, and supported his late wife's work with the Garden Club of Montclair, both physically and by sharing many of the hybrids he developed.

Dr. Wilson served in World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps in the 5th Division, including the assault on Iwo Jima, and later with the Army Reserves.

Dr. Wilson was predeceased by his wife, Julia May (Kennedy) Wilson; a great-grandson, Callahan David Saksen; and a daughter-in-law, Alice Henry Wilson. He is survived by his children, Elizabeth W. Saksen, Thomas M. Wilson, Carole Wilson Strickroth, Janyce M. Wilson and her husband, Joseph Ascione, Dr. Jean T. Wilson Jr. and his wife, Maripat, and Julie Bien and her husband Richard; his companion, Patricia Callahan Parillo; his sister, Geraldine Clare; a sister-in-law, Joan Bradley Kennedy; eight grandchildren, Alex and his wife Ellie, Katie and her husband Michael, Dr. Megan, third-generation veterinarian Dr. Michael, Colin, Elizabeth, Grace and Sean; stepgranddaughter Sarah and her husband David; and six great-grandchildren, Gavin, Claire, Ryan, Maggie, Rory Thomas, and Maeve.

A funeral Mass was held on March 28 in Notre Dame Church in North Caldwell, followed by interment in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Montclair.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Tri-Star Chorus Scholarship Fund would be greatly appreciated, so that part of his legacy will be to "Keep America Singing."

Dr. Wilson was a very favorite patient of mine in the pulmonary rehab. clinic in Summit, NJ. I would look so forward to his visits and enjoyed all his wonderful quips that we laughed together about. My most favorite one was when he came thru the door and I greeted him with "Nice to see you" he responded with "Nice to be seen!"

Dr. Wilson was the consummate gentleman and veterinarian. He was my neighbor in Montclair and my Scoutmster for many years. My sister Eileen worked with him before she became a veterinarian.

Rest in Peace dear Dr. Wilson. He was a patient of mine at the pulmonary rehab clinic. I enjoyed him and grew very fond of him. Quite the gentleman. I would say to him "It has been nice to see you and he would respond that it is nice to be seen!" I will always have great memories of this wonderful gentleman....

My deepest condolences to the entire Wilson family. I knew Jean professionally and personally for 32 years. He was a great guy in all respects. The world is a less place without him and could use more people with his strong honest character. I will miss our conversations and was fortunate to have him in my life.

I am very sorry for the loss of Dr Wilson Sr; he used to treat my cats and he helped save the life of my beloved first cat Oreo. May the family remember him fondly through all their happy memories. He lived a long, successful life!

I have very fond memories of all of you in your home on Glen Ridge Avenue, all the growth love and support during our high school times. I am so happy to have Carole and Betsy continue in my life currently playing tennis and none of that would have been possible without your Dad, Dr. Wilson. Thank you Doc!
