Joel Krauser was a great educator who touched the lives of many lucky students. I am very thankful to have been one. He taught me that artists do not have to be great at drawing and his support gave me confidence that I carry still. RIP

I had Mr. Krauser for Graphics in 1991. I was 16 and insecure about the quality of my art, and Mr. Krauser was always gentle, kind and helpful, bringing out the best in me and in all his students. He treated us not as a bunch of angst ridden teenagers, but with respect, as artists. We loved him for it. Mr. Krauser stands as one of the best teachers I ever had, in any subject, from elementary school right through college and beyond. I have continued an interest in photography that started in that Graphics class. I am saddened to hear of Mr. Krauser's passing, and extend my condolences to his family & friends.

To the Krauser Family,

I was so sorry to hear of Joel's passing. I was a former student at Demarest (73-77) and then a fellow collegue from (84 until he retired. I was not much of an artist, but learned caligraphy from him. Ever time I use caligraphy, I think of him. I am sure he touched many lives. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time.

Mr. Krauser was my art teacher in the early 70's at Demarest. He was wonderful. I was deeply saddened to hear of Joel's passing. He was a gift to all of us. I'm still a professional artist now 30+ years later, and I do remember his teaching and his encouragement. We loved you Mr. Krauser. Thank you.

I always knew what an incredible man my father was; I knew how incredibly lucky we were to be raised by someone so kind, insightful, patient, loving and inspirational. It is amazing (although not surprising) to see how he touched the lives not just of our family, but his students, his friends, friends of our friends...thank you all so much for the beautiful words, the special memories you are sharing with us of your time with him. We love him and miss him so much but his wisdom, compassion, humor and unique insight live on in all of us.

I am deeply moved by Joel’s passing and want you to know that you all have been in my thoughts constantly. The times we spent together have always been memorable…..remember when Tom proposed to me on the cruise and we tried to plan a wedding?? What fun!

I thought of all the accolades at his retirement party and read the comments on line as people remembered his gift of patience and ability to instill inspiration in students and faculty alike. What a wonderful legacy he has left behind.

I wish I had taken the opportunity to thank him for being a mentor and role model in my son’s life. He lived life to the fullest and grabbed every brass ring. Bravo!

May your sadness be overshadowed by the beauty of a life well lived and the blessings Joel shared with those around him. What a gift……a life with no regrets.

Joel Krauser was my art teacher for four years at NVRHS. He was also the most inspirational teacher I ever had and I credit him with my passion for art. He allowed each student to find their own unique talent. Though I hadn't seen him since graduating in 1968, I think of him often.

My deepest condolences to the Krauser family.

My sincerest condolences to Mr. Krauser's family. He'll always be 'Mr. Krauser' to me, a talented, kind, generous teacher, with an infinite amount of patience for young often obnoxious students, in the midst of much self doubt and teenage angst. The art room was a 'home' for many of us. Art classes at NV were exceptional and I still have much of that early HS work (somewhere) including from my first printmaking class that amazingly covered silk screen, wood cut, etching, aquatint, and lithography! As an artist/ printmaker, I am sorry that I never let Mr. Krauser know how much his classes and guidance meant to me.
A belated thank you to his family for sharing the man and his gifts with all of us.

Joel was an insightful man who would express a thought or suggest an action that few would take the time to convey. Long after my transfer to Old Tappan I would see him in downtown Tenafly and regret that I could not enjoy the privilege of daily contact. Shalom ! Joel

Mr. Krauser was my Freshman Fine Arts teacher back in the 60's at NVRHS.

Frankly speaking, I was just another kid in his class, but he inspired me in countless ways. He was truly an extraordinary human being.

I remember Mr. Krauser as an extremely knowledgable and sensitive individual.

Sincere condolences to the Krauser family. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

Joel originally taught me photography during a summer school program between 6th and 7th grades (1971), and then was my graphic arts teacher in high school at Demarest. He inspired a life-long love of image-making that I find difficult to describe in words (but I could in pictures). There was something so creatively nurturing about how Joel would take the extra time with me that I needed to get a print exactly right, or to just discuss what it was about an image that made it special. He had been entering my thoughts lately so I looked him up online and his daughter Rachel was able to connect us. When we spoke last week I was filled with the emotion of gratitude and love for this man who gave me exactly what I needed in this lifetime. And I was so happy to hear that, after retiring in the early 90s, he took up tenor sax and began playing jazz with his son. This is a dream only a few take seriously enough to pursue at the level Joel did. He lived a tremendously full life, giving gifts to countless people in so many ways. Joel, you will be in my Spirit forever. May your children be blessed always.

my wife, muriel katz, retired 22 years ago. she has alzheimer's but i'm sure that she has many wonderful memories of joel; he designed my wedding ring which says "hineni", "here i am" which has been my blessing these past 16 years; his painting "a pensive woman" [?] has graced our homes for 22 years.
traditionally we say "blessed is the wise and merciful judge". his passing hurts but from the pensive, musing, lived-in-look on his face i would say that you had a wonderfully exciting, interesting, life together. love and blessings muriel and howard katz
i forget the name of the teacher who struck off my ring but whoever sees it, loves it. she's sleeping right now.

It was my honor to have taught with Joel for 27 years at NV. As a young teacher I discovered a note in my mailbox from Joel praising me for work on some project. That this busy department head would take time to compliment a new teacher from another department moved me a great deal. It also taught me what it means to truly be a colleague; to make that extra effort to support your fellow teachers. Joel was an extraordinary human being. I remember him as being solid, sensitive, informed, articulate, deliberate in his actions and words. He taught me what it means to teach by love and I will miss him tremendously. So sorry that I cannot be with you on Sunday morning. My love to Adele and the family.

Joel Krauser, or Mr. Krauser was my art teacher for four years at NVRHS. He was inspirational, rational, clear with every concept and technique, and dedicated to his role as an educator. His substantial influence on me is felt every day in my life as an art teacher, educator, painter and parent. I frequently remember Joel's quiet confidence in us, the importance of making art, and doing the job well.
I extend his family my greatest sympathy. Please know, many of Mr. Krauser's lessons will go on for generations.

Please accept my sincere condolences on Mr. Krauser passing. He was an important teacher to me and I took several art classes from him at NV. I went on to study printmaking and painting at UCSC and got my Masters at Parsons. I am still painting today and in my study I have the first silkscreen I ever did framed and hanging on the wall. Joel Krauser guided me through the process and made it magical! I will always think of him when I look at this print. Be Peace

My condolences on the passing of your husband, father, and grandfather. Mr. Krauser was my teacher at NVRHS in the late 1970's. He taught me many techniques that I have continued to use to this day. I remember him as a patient, dedicated teacher. I live on the same street as the Art Center in NM...I saw his named listed on the faculty list... I'm very sad that I never took the time to go visit him!!
My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

NVRHSDEM was a magical place because of colleagues like Joel. He taught me much about cultivating the talents of young people, expecting high levels of performance from students as well as teachers. When he spoke, he was wise, when he laughed, he was kind. I will miss running in to him around town, hearing about his art and his music. I hope that our wonderful memories of Joel will give you ,Adele, and your children comfort. My thoughts and feelings are with you. Connie Hochberg
