John Buffington Obituary

BUFFINGTON John, of Bergenfield, New Jersey died Tuesday, December 21, 2010. John was born in Glen Ridge NJ, March 10, 1926, to Emory and Doris Buffington. John graduated high school in 1943 and then served in the military towards the end of WWII in Saipan. After leaving the military service he graduated from Susquehanna University and became a teacher in Bergenfield, NJ, and then an elementary school principal in Maywood New Jersey. He also attained a Masters degree from the Rutgers Graduate School of Education during this time. John retired in 1993 and began the next phase of his active life, which included volunteering at the Center for Food Action, Alternatives to Domestic Violence, and the Central Unitarian Church. John's many interests included family, photography, reading, the arts, and travel, and he was also a pretty good "handyman". He loved to tackle a good project! He was also known as a warm, caring, and compassionate person who was generous, along with his wife Betty, to many causes. John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty, their adult children Karen, Nancy, Doug, and Peter, along with grandchildren Meredith, Ariel, Mike, Erika, Alexa, Linda, and Madison, and great- grandchildren Abigail and Taylor. We will miss his warm smile and thoughtfulness. A memorial service will be held on January 29th at 1 PM at the Central Unitarian Church, 156 Forest Avenue, Paramus, NJ. Please send donations in lieu of flowers to the following organizations: The Center for Food Action in Englewood, NJ (cfanj.org/donate); Family Promise of Bergen County in Teaneck NJ. (bergenfamilypromise.org); The Central Unitarian Church Endowment Fund in Paramus NJ. (cucparamus.org)

John was one of my father's dearest friends. I have wonderful memories of him whether camping at Cape Cod, hiking the Palisades, renovating the Buff's house or ours, or just talking, smiling and being a good friend. In my mind, John embodied the archetype of a good man, and he will be missed.

I had the pleasure of meeting John when he was a volunteer in the Court Accompaniment Program for Bergen County Alternatives Domestic Violence Program-- a kinder and gentler man I have yet to meet. Many of our victims, understandably would be suspect of a man reaching out to help them while in this type of crisis, but John had such a gentle and caring way and was able to offer comfort and encouragement to victims as they attempted to navigate the legal system. I had not seen John in a few years, but was touched by him and sense of fairness and caring. My deepest condolences to his family on their loss. Sincerely, Nancy Hartzband

I first met John when he was Principal at Memorial School and I was a new teacher there. I remember how passionate he was about meeting the needs of the children but also very caring and supportive of his teachers. I was very lucky to have him as a mentor as a beginning teacher and later in life we continued our relationship as friends who shared interests in community, family, and children. I just received a card this week from Betty and John and this news is very sad. My sincere sympathy goes our to Betty and their family. I know John has left everyone he knew with wonderful memories of this caring and sincere man.

I remember Mr. Buffington when I was a student at Washington School in Bergenfield. He was a real inspiration to many of us in elementary school. I am proud to say that he inspired me as I enter my 31st year of teaching!

RIP great educator and Thanks for all the work you have done and the lives you have touched!
