John Paul, Sr., age 83, died Thursday November 22, 2012. Born in Brooklyn, NY to James and Frances Goebel, he attended college and received his degree at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. He was married to Patricia Kenny of New York City, daughter of legendary songwriter Nick Kenny. He had a long and accomplished career in the fashion industry under the brand of John Paul Goebel, Inc. His fashion business worked in men and boys sportswear design, color consulting for textiles, all fashion for men, women and children's wear and merchandising consultant for all fashion levels. He received many awards and accolades in fashion with his two biggest honors being named Designer of the Year on the cover of Time Magazine and also the first recipient of the New Directions Award for Excellence in Fashion. He enjoyed his time as the President of the alumni association at The Fashion Institute of Technology and was honored to be one of their distinguished commencement speakers. John retired in 1995 and spent the last two decades at his family's redwood cabin in West Milford, NJ. John is survived by two children Nick K. Goebel of Myrtle Beach, SC and Tara Goebel Murphy of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, daughter-in-law Lena Goebel of West Milford, sister Audrey Vion of Tenafly and seven grandchildren. Predeceased by two children Suzette Goebel Caggiano (1995) and John Paul Goebel Jr., (2007) and brothers Robert J. (1997) and James Goebel. Visiting hours Tuesday 5-7 P.M. at Richards Funeral Home, 1440 Union Valley Rd., West Milford with a service at 6:30 P.M. Final disposition is private.
