Mark Kahn Obituary

Dr. Mark Kahn

Haworth - Died the way he lived-with single-minded determination on August 5, 2021. He was born on August 10, 1949 in Mineola, New York to Sylvia (nee Belzer) and Herbert, "Sonny" Kahn, both of whom predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Brenda, four sons and two grandchildren. Christopher (Elizabeth and granddaughter, Winter Miles), Max (Bridgette and grandson, Conrad Marcus), Aran, and Kerrey (Julia). He is also survived by his paternal uncle, Howard of Pompano Beach, his older brother, Kenneth (Anne Lynn Kettles) Kahn of Pompano Beach, Florida, his sister, Janet (James) Knauer of Denver, Colorado and four nieces, two nephews (predeceased by nephew Avery Kahn), and six great-nephews and one great-niece.

Mark's strong personality exhibited itself early and was the stuff of family legend. Insatiably curious and remarkably intelligent, he skipped two grades. He was born on Long Island and grew up in Manhattan, where he attended high school, playing varsity tennis and soccer, and where he was awarded a Mayor's Committee Scholarship for college. He attended Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, where he graduated cum laude in English literature. In 1970, he attended the Albany Medical College of Union University and was awarded his MD degree in 1974. He then completed a surgical residency at the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, and also participated in renal transplantation at Cornell University. In 1978, he was awarded the Leon Ginsberg Prize for Outstanding Surgical Resident. Following residency, Dr. Kahn completed the vascular fellowship at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center and then joined the practice of Englewood Surgical Associates in 1980. He retired in 2015 and over those thirty-five years gained a reputation as a provocative and brilliant surgeon. His patients adored him, crediting him with saving their life and also crediting him for telling them when/if they didn't need surgery.

He was a devoted and demanding father who cherished getting home for a family dinner each night. He was actively involved in coaching baseball, basketball, and soccer and ran the Haworth Soccer League for many years. He loved his Jeeps, his dogs and a wood burning fire. He was constantly active whether learning to windsurf, telemark ski or snowboard. He absolutely loved retirement, reveling in a variety of projects, many of which had to do with repurposing materials. He threw nothing away. He also decided that Hamilton College needed Adirondack chairs scattered around campus and organized a committee of alumni to fundraise and built the chairs at a couple of reunions.

Cremation will be privately handled by Moritz Funeral Home. Family will host a socially distant open house for friends who wish to call on Saturday from 4-8PM, Sunday from 12-4PM and Monday from 6-8. A celebration of his life and a tree planting will be scheduled for sometime in October.

Donations may be made to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, Helen Hayes Hospital, Hamilton College, or an environmental / animal welfare cause of your choice.

I knew Mark in high school.
I loved him.

As an undergraduate at Hamilton, Mark was always the guy who spoke up in class. An English major who became a doctor, the compassion he learned in literature touched everything he did in science. When he returned to campus decades later, he and his dog arrived in his Jeep with an idea: The Adirondack chairs he scatted all over college hill encourage formal colloquy every bit as they afforded a spot for quiet relaxation. And that was oh-so-kahn: smart as a whip but as comfortable as an old shoe.

Mark was a bright light in our medical school class - clearly an independent thinker. Although we were both at Beth Israel, albeit in different programs he being in surgery and I being in medicine, we lost track of each other after I moved to Miami for my residency. It is wonderful to learn that in addition to a successful and satisfying career, he also had many outside interests and had a successful and satisfying personal and family life - this is the most important personal achievement. May his family and loved ones seek comfort in all that he achieved in life - for others as well as for himself.
