I heard many entertaining stories about his classes growing up. He was the perfect role model for young impressionable children to emulate upon emigrating to this country. My brother was very fond of his teacher and when I finally met the man, I had the utmost respect. Although I never took one of his classes, Mr. Caez had an important impact on my brother's educational experience at HMS during the early 80's. Successful and truly inspirational... He stood for what many of us aspired to become. My condolences to his family.

To our friend and hero, Mr. Caez. May God keep you in His eternal Glory. I am saddened to find this out without first having to have met you in the last twenty five plus years to tell you how much you meant to me and how much what you taught me during my time at HMS (82-83), I am still carrying/practicing at present time. I know how big your heart was, and I know I will miss you.

It was great working for a principal like Mr. Caez. I think he believed in me and respected me, and knowing that gave me the confidence boost I needed to do my job well. He was a good man who gave sound and loving advice to the parents and staff at Hillers. My condolences to his family. I hope it helps you to know how many people were blessed by Mr. Caez. Robin Caino

The best teacher I ever had. He was gentle and patient, I learned from him to enjoy life and that it didn't matter where you came from, with hard work and discipline everyone can achieve their dreams. My prayers are with his family. This wonderful man will surely be missed, but he will forerver survive in the hearts of all the students who loved him and cherished him.

To the grieving family members and close friends of a good, caring and strong character, Michael Caez, or as I fondly remember, Mr. Caez:
As an immigrant to Hackensack in that influx wave from Latin America of the late 70s early 80s, I recall having my first exposure to the U.S. educational system through the stern and firm voice and no non-sense approach of Mr. Caez. At that time, Mr. Caez was responsible for the ESL (English as a second language) program at Hackensack Middle School where the cultural mix was wide and varied comprised of students from my native Colombia, Ecuador, Central America, Panama, and even Vietnam and Guyana.
Although buried in my subconscious now for decades since last I saw our good friend and teacher, writing this Farewell has cascaded a flood of overwhelmingly positive and inspiring memories. For instance, with the ascend of Japan as an economic superpower in the 70s and 80s, I recall Mr. Caez including in his social studies curriculum a section on Japanese history and language. So to this day, I still credit Mr. Caez with the only 3 words I know in the Japanese lexicon: Konichiwa, Arigato, and Sayonara.
He clearly gave us a perspective in that particular social studies class that I would never see again in my long educational career. It was in that class that I first learned that the Russians had sent into space a dog named Layka to orbit the Earth making it the first living species to make that flight. Unfortunately for Layka, the Russians did not know how to de-orbit.
I vividly recall the Cultural Fair he championed, promoted and assembled in those years at Hackensack Middle School. What started out as an exhibition of pictures of our beautiful native Tierritas (“native lands), quickly mushroomed in those short 3 years into a collection of cultural expositions that included foods, arts and artesania, and who could forget the choreographed dance show for the whole school to witness. In essence, this Cultural Expo symbolized Mr. Caez's message to the school, the administration and the Board that our rich Latin tradition was additive, one to embrace and nurture and which one day would make our beloved Hackensack proud. And indeed, it has.
Mr. Caez was very dedicated to his students, to his cultural traditions in an uncompromising way and for all that you will always reside in a special place in our Hearts and Minds.
So it is with a heavy Heart and deepest sorrow that I now say to you our Friend and Teacher, Arigato for all you did for us, and Sayonara Caez-san!!
