Robert Mende Obituary

PEQUANNOCK — Services were held for Robert Graham Mende, 86, of the Pompton Plains section of this community, who died on Wednesday, October 30, 3013.

Born in Newark, Mr. Mende grew up in Maplewood and lived in Convent Station before dividing his time between New Jersey and Cape Coral, Fla., and then moving to Pompton Plains. He worked for Foster-Wheeler from 1953 to 1956 and Bird-Johnson Co. from 1956 to 1962. Next, he was the senior naval architect at the J.J. Henry Company from 1962 to 1969 before becoming the executive director of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, retiring in 1991. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was a trustee and active member of the Webb Institute Alumni Association. He was the recipient of the Vice Admiral E.S. "Jerry" Land Medal in 1991 as well, among other awards.

Services were Saturday at the Chapel of Cedar Crest Village, Pompton Plains. Arrangements were by Bradley & Sons Funeral Homes.

Mr. Mende is survived by his daughter, Lisa Mende Senus of Mason, N.H.; his son, Robert of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and a grandson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Webb Institute, 298 Crescent Beach Road, Glen Cove, NY 11542-1398.

He was predeceased by his wife, the former Joan Tamlyn.
