Doris Rose Hodkinson September 26, 1913 - February 4, 2011 Norwich - Doris Rose Hodkinson, 97, of Norwich, died February 4, 2011 at the Norwichtown Rehab & Care Center. She was born September 26, 1913 at the home of her grandparents, Frank R. and Flavia (Buck) Rose in Bozrah, the daughter of the late Harold A. Rose and Mabel (Magee) Rose. Mrs. Hodkinson was an 11th generation direct descendant of Robert and Margery Rose, who in 1634, sailed from lpswich, England on the ship Francis and landed in Watertown, MA, and later immigrated to Wethersfield. She grew up in the Bean Hill section of Norwichtown, and attended grade school in what is now the Norwich Grange Hall on West Town Street and was a member of the first graduating class at Samuel Huntington School in Norwichtown. She graduated from the Norwich Free Academy in the class of 1934. Her first marriage was to the late John P. Freyer on August 4, 1934. They were married by the Rev. Mr. Eller at the parsonage of the First Methodist Church on Bean Hill. For many years the Freyers maintained a farm on Plain Hill Road in Norwichtown. Mr. Freyer died in 1960. She was married to the late Norman Hodkinson on November 21, 1962 at the Lee Memorial Methodist Church. He predeceased her in 1980. She worked for many years on the cafeteria staff in both the Commercial and Main buildings at the Norwich Free Academy. She was a member of the Lee Memorial United Methodist Church of Norwich and had been an active member of the United Methodist Women. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years. Dot was an accomplished seamstress and very artistic with painting and crafts. She enjoyed making wedding cakes and entertaining family and her circle of friends. She was a resident of the Norwich area for most of her life Survivors include two sons, Norman R. Freyer, Homosassa, FL Gordon R. Freyer, McGaheysville, VA; a daughter, Janice M. Wells, Bozrah; and a stepdaughter, June M. Hodkinson, Taftville; two sisters, Mildred N. Gladue, of Norwich and Ernestine R. Hindle, of Norwich; three grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Two brothers and one sister, Paul C. Rose, Clayton S. Rose, and Muriel S. Stott predeceased her. She will be interred at the Maplewood Cemetery in Norwich. The National Cremation Society is in charge of arrangements. A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.
