To the Schroeder family, I have thought daily about Matthew since his passing and my prayers have been with all of you and all of his friends. I have watched my son Jason struggle with the reality of life and death since loosing his good friend and I have searched to find the words to have it all make sense to him... What we have come to realize is that Matt had a purpose in his life and that he really did accomplish that purpose everytime he touched a new life. Reading all these entries and listening to his friends talk about him in these last few weeks only strengthens this idea. I know he is in a better place, and I know that he will be looking over all of us until we see him again. I am thankful that my last memory of seeing Matt was one of him laughing and smiling and I have included those pictures. I will always have a place in my heart for your son, he truely was one of a kind. I miss him and love him. Ellen Huard (Palermo)

To the Schroeder Family,
Words, however kind, can't mend your heartache:Please know we care and understand your pain. We share your loss of Matt, we wish you comfort and peace of mind. May you find strength in the love of family and in the warm embrace of friends.
We have lit a candle in loving memory of Matthew at: http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng
Under the name:(MATT) or group:(M.S.S)
Please join us in lighting candles in memory of Matt.
Matt was a great kid and he will be deeply missed by many that had the opportunity to know and love him. Randy said it best: "The Mattie Hug" this will be one of the best memories of Matt that we can all still share.
One personal hope is that Matthew and Richard are together in the not so distant place known as "Heaven". We will be joined with them again some day as our names are also called from beyond the veil.

To All of Those Who Loved Schroeder,
What a great loss for so many, not only to those who knew and will always love him but for those he still had yet to meet. To the unlucky few who never had a chance to laugh with this great friend, son, brother, nephew, grandson. I went to college with Schroeder and while some friendships came and went, we always kept in touch. He told me how he'd love to move up to Boston, I was to be his tour guide and that, of course, meant I was to lead him to the city's best pubs and of course, straight to Fenway Park. I never got the chance to do this but it seems, ironically, our roles are reversed as I will now look up to my buddy to guide me. I did not find out about his passing until today. I was upset about missing his funeral service but then thought how thankful I should be that my last memory, the last photograph in my mind is of us seeing each other back at SC and being so excited to see one another, followed by a hug and silly laughter. A brief sentimental moment only to be shattered by him making fun of me, cracking a joke and picking on me. I loved that, if you can't pick on your friends, then who can you pick on? To Matt's family, thank you for raising a great son, a true character, a person who one might meet only once but would always remember. Those are the very best kind of people, those are the people that make the world not so bad of a place, no matter how dark a day falls upon us. To Jae and the rest of the SC Crew, we had some good times with Schroeder. Those memories will always keep him alive and well. God Bless you Schroed, you will always hold a special place in my heart and through these tears, there is a chuckle and smile that seem to break through, thank you for allowing that to happen.

To the schroeder family, young and old, I'm so sorry for your loss, but encouraged by your resilency and strength when I saw you. My love for you has been from day one and will continue throughout my life. Your son, my friend, your brother, my brother had given me such great advice and character-molding qualities that had radiated from you. I know you know how much I loved Matt. I just want to express to you how much I'm going to continue to love him and your family.
Schroed:
So many words follow your name when I think of you, which happens to be on an hourly basis the past days. These words include LOYAL, determined, music lover, Yankee-hater, my best friend...slash that...I'd have to say you were my third brother. We cried, laughed, fought, fought back, stressed, and loved the things we did. Feasible or not, I'm glad I have thousands of memories to live off now that you are gone. Many of them concerts and events we could not afford, but did anyway. It has taken a while to read this group of letters on theday.com. But it shows how widespread your heart truly was. I was especially moved by Matt's students and the Wheeler High School team. Your condolences were above and beyond, just like his abilities. I'll never forget the first time I saw your teaching video for class. Didnt expect much at first, but I realized that you were born to teach. Even better, you were born to teach underprivledged kids, poor kids, mental health students. Students that people had trouble with, but you thrived on. And because you treated them with such dignity, they now carry your name with the utmost pride. Your name truly will live in others, many whom you didnt even know. But, Schroed...I'm hurting, cause it's really hard not to pick you up from work now, or take you off my cell, or get rid of your last text message. This has truly changed my perspective on a few things. And you had that superpower, basically only getting through my head with actions.
You always wanted me and encouraged me to finish school. Not many people had the ability or drive to pound my brain with reasons why I need to finish for me. Not too many people believe I can finish school even now, but I still believe that you are there for me, and I finally have a real guidance counselor. And I hope you can see from above, that I'm going to use my education to further your name and cause...
Some of the alumni of Springfield College and I are going to develop a scholarship fund in Matt Schroeder's name to go to three students: a special need student pursuing a college education and a male and female student pursuing a college education in special needs education. We plan on developing this non-profit fund through a special fundraising dinner on a waterfront restaurant this fall and a charity golf tournament in the spring. We are going to need lots of help with donations, sponsors, and volunteers. Please, if you would like to help matt continue his legacy in helping special needs students, please email me at [email protected]. I can give you more information then.
I just want to thank you Matt...I never called you Matt...it's Schroed, for everything you have done directly and indirectly in my life. I'm a better person; we all are better people for having you in this world for such a short time. Your tenure here my have been short, but you know as well as I do that we lived it up... You sent me a message online a couple of months ago with this phrase you got from a Jay-Z lyric..I'll leave you with that, it truly defines I love you kid..
"And tell me you wont ball every chance you get and any chance you hit, we live for the moment, makes sense dont it?" Jay-Z

Hi Mr. and Mrs. Schroeder-
I knew your son because he worked with my son who is autistic at Wheeler Middle School. Mr. Matt was truly one of a kind. He held a gift to be able to get inside of my child's world and open it up to the next level. My son was Mr. Matt's little buddy and Mr. Matt was my son's best friend. My son is having a tough time right now dealing with losing his best friend, but asked God the other day if Mr. Matt could be his guardian angel, as to keep him near. Mr. Matt will be with my son forever. The memory of Matt will live on in our family and I am honored to have known him. The bear hugs, the jokes and especially the doors he opened to enter my son's world as to take his hand to walk with him into ours. Thank you for having such a wonderful son. He will be missed so very much.

Schroeder Family,
When I heard about Matt’s passing, I was deeply saddened. I immediately began to pray. I could not stop thinking about and feeling for his family and especially, Hillary. I knew how close they were and how much love they had for each other. I was instantly relieved and comforted by the thought of how much faith the Schroeder family and Matt had in the lord. At that moment I knew Matt was with our father and would be taken care of. Matt was and will continue to be a blessing for all who knew him. My prayers are with the family. May God ease your pain and comfort your thoughts. Continue to seek him and read his word for all his work is done through love. Amen.
With Love and remembrance,
Ellen Kane

wow coach we all just heard about ur passing...All of us you coached two years ago are in high school. you all had high expectation to us and thought of us all so highly. I remember all the stories you would tell us on the bus rides to games. The year you coached us was such an awesome baseball year. You were a great coach and will be missed. It was wierd, because the day of your passing, a kid on the team mentioned you, and we had this whole conversation about you and the things we would do while you were with us at school and at baseball. Maybe while we were talking about you, you were with us. When you did coach the team, you thought every single kid on the team had the skills to be great players in high school and beyond. You taught us a lot, coach. We have a state game on tuesday and we are all going to write your initials on our hat in your memory. As we walk on to the field, the one thing we will be remembering is you.
Thank you for being such a good mentor while you were with us. Thank you for everything coach, we are all going to deeply miss you.

To begin I am sorry for the families loss of this wonderful friend, son and loved one. I had the pleaser of attending Springfield College with Schroeder and shared many laughs with him. In college, any time I saw him I would go running up to him screaming "Schroeder" and be engulfed in a big bear hug. He was fun, honest and most of all loyal. He has always been thought of, will always be remembered and never forgotten. He was warm, funny and such a good person to have known. He will always be missed!!!
