Thomas Sullivan Obituary

Thomas "Tom" Richard Sullivan Apr. 18, 1960 - Jan. 13, 2015 NORWICH - Thomas "Tom" Richard Sullivan, 54, of Norwich, husband of Susan M. (Hussey) Sullivan, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 13, 2015. He was born in Norwich on April 18, 1960, the son of the late John and Marion (Williamson) Sullivan. Tom attended the West Thames Street School and graduated from the Norwich Free Academy in 1978. He also attended Eastern Connecticut State University. Tom entered the United States Marine Corps in 1982 and proudly served his country in uniform until 1987. His commitment to public service also included two terms on the Norwich City Council. On October 20, 1990 Tom and Susan were married in Norwich, where they have made their home and raised three children: Robert (23), Margaret (19) and Kiera (18) Sullivan. Tom's professional career included working as an industrial engineer for a number of large and well-known companies including Electric Boat, Westinghouse Electric, and Ratheon. At the time of his passing, he was the owner of a franchise for the House Doctors, providing home repair and maintenance services for a number of customers in the region. Tom Sullivan will be remembered as a thoughtful and generous person who never had a unkind word to say about anyone. He was extremely proud of his family and children, his Irish heritage and his hometown of Norwich. Tom was as a member of the Elks Club in Norwich for many years, where he served as an Exalted Ruler. He was also a longtime member of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and a communicant at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Throughout his life, he enjoyed golfing whenever he could but was never happier or more at peace than when spending time with his extended family and wide circle of friends, whether at the holidays, a special occasion or family get-together. In addition to his wife and children, Tom is survived by his seven brothers, sisters and their families; Maureen Sullivan and husband Jack Siggins of Annapolis, MD, Carole and Richard McCarthy of Mystic, Joanne Sullivan of East Hartford, Jean and Gerard Depot of Norwich, John and Debra Sullivan of Cromwell, Robert Sullivan of Norwich and James Sullivan and Linda Sanchez of Norwich; his father and mother-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Hussey of Norwich, sisters-in-law Judith and Owen Eagan of West Hartford, Lynda and Thomas Twomey of Midlothian, VA, Cathleen Special of Norwich and numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Patrick Cathedral in Norwich on Saturday, January 17 at 11:00 A.M. Contributions in Tom's memory may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Wounded Warrior Project. Tom Sullivan was greatly loved by his friends and family and will be missed immeasurably.

I just heard today. Tom was my ancestry buddy and cousin that I didn't know I had and don't know what I did without him in my life. He was so intelligent, genuine and funny. He taught me so much of my past and helped appreciate my family even more.

To the Sullivan and Hussey Families:

I am sorry to hear of Tom's passing. I knew Tom as a classmate as far back as elementary school, covering his stint as a city councilman as I was working at WICH, and being a next-door neighbor to his in-laws, the Husseys. Spoke to him just a few months ago as his company was doing some repair work at the radio station. He always made it a point to come over to say Hi if he was at his in-laws, and I was outside at home. I wish his family peace and comfort in this difficult time.

Remembrance of Thomas Richard “Tommy” Sullivan

I was sorry to hear of the passing of Thomas Richard “Tommy” Sullivan. A friend of mine who still lives in Norwich sent me a copy of Tommy's obituary.

Tommy was one of the regular kinds form the neighborhood of Thamesville, Norwich, CT, and was from a very good and proud Irish home. My family home was just one block away on the same side of the street, on the corner of West Thames Street and Geer Ave.

I recall the old Sullivan house as a large two story Victorian home. It was yellow with brown trim, or perhaps vice versa, it has been a long time since I have lived in the Norwich area. If memory serves me it was the second house North-East in from the intersection of West Thames Street and Spring Garden Ave. I remember the Sullivan's being civic minded and great supporters of Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

It is true; my interaction with Tommy was limited as I was closer in age to his brother John, better known as Johnny to his friends. In my memory Tommy, like his other sibling was always involved in some sport related exercise and was very much about fair play. In my mind's eye Tommy is still the redheaded freckled youth with the proverbial map of Ireland across his face headed to a sporting event or some adventure he was participating in with his friends.

Since my family moved out of Norwich in 1974, my visits to the area have been limited, but I would catch up on the news and gossip on my infrequent travels to my home town. For example, I had heard Tommy attended Eastern Connecticut State University, and that he had gone into the U. S. Marine Corps, subsequently married, and continued to live in the Norwich area.

Yes, my knowledge of Tommy as an adult is sketchy at best, but I have not lived in the Norwich area for 41 years. Like Tommy and many others, I too joined the military and served in the U. S. Air Force for 33 years. I married; and now work for the Department of Defense in the mid-west.

Tommy's passing came as a surprise to me as he was a younger man. Reading Tommy's obituary brought to light the full life he led, and his service to his county, community, and his family. From what I can tell Tommy Sullivan was a good man and a loving husband and father and he will be very missed by all who knew and loved him.

Sue, Bobby, Meg, Kiera and all the Hussey and Sullivan Clan,
We are so shocked and saddened by your loss. We finally got Tom to show up more than once in the Black Point Beach Circle this summer … we can cherish those memories … and now our circle is broken! Tom was so proud of all of you, his extended family and the Town of Norwich (of course I would joke with him it was no West Hartford).
Shevon has St. Brigid School remembering all of you in their daily prayers. We will all be here for you!
Love always and God Bless,

I will always remember you for your kind heart and your sincere desire to be helpful to others. There were countless times I asked for your advice and you always came through for me. You were a great brother-in-law, and you and Susan raised three beautiful children together. You accomplished a lot in life, but being a fantastic father was among your greatest achievements, I always enjoyed watching you interact with your children. You were meant to be a dad. I will miss your big heart sense of humor. As will many others. God Bless you, Tom, and rest in peace.

You will be missed always, by me and so many others. God Bless you, Tom, and rest in peace.
