James Salestrom Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the death of well-known entertainer and singer-songwriter Jim Salestrom. Jim passed away on Nov. 22, 2023, surrounded by loved ones at his home in Arvada, Colorado, after a decade-long battle with cancer. He was 67 years old. James Kevin Salestrom impacted countless lives throughout his long and successful musical career. To his family, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. He was born on Feb. 20, 1956, in Omaha, to Virgil and Janice Salestrom He is survived by his wife, Pamela Dailer Salestrom, his daughter. Casey, son-in-law, Brandon Freeman and son, James Salestrom Jr. of Nashville, Tennessee. The true joy of his life was his grandson, Casey and Brandon's son, Thomas James. Jim also dearly loved his brothers, Chuck and Tom Salestrom and their families. To his fans, Jim was a joy to listen to, a world-class singer-songwriter and an Emmy-winning performer. His love of music started at the early age of 7 when he got his first guitar. As he got older, he started writing songs and formed several groups in Nebraska with his brother, Chuck. The most notable of these was Timberline, which further launched his career. He played guitar and sang in Dolly Parton's band over decades. Her shows took him all over the world. Jim also had a close relationship with John Denver and performed with him throughout the years. He shared his love of life and positive spirit through his music. He worked with countless wonderful musicians and performed for five U.S. Presidents and numerous members of the U.S. Supreme Court. He treated everyone with love and respect. Jim was known for his humor, infectious smile, positive outlook on life and a gift to make everyone feel special. He sang like an angel, and luckily his music will endure long past his lifetime. In one of his final notes, Jim said, "I am eternally grateful for all of you, and it's not "goodbye," it's just "see you later". Plans for memorial services will be announced on Jim Salestrom's social media and website.

Jim was the consumate professional - always on key, always in tune, always upbeat, always happy to be working with us, his sidemen, to share musical thoughts, ideas and passages. There was never a negative moment with Jim present - never. My memories of being in-studio with Jim are some of the fondest memories I have, within a musical setting. I will never forget him, and I cherish his songs, his love of life and his extraordinary kindness. Best to You, Jim, Always, Richard Hallam

I am devastated to learn of Jim's passing. I had the honor and pleasure of playing bass on Jim's album, 'First Edition.' Jim was an outstanding vocalist, writer, guitarist, arranger and human being. I will miss him greatly. Best to You, Jim, Love to You and Family. Richard Hallam

I am so incredibly sad to learn of Jim's passing. My family lived next door to George & Charlotte Thuman (Aunt and Uncle of the Salestrom boys) in Ralston, NE. I was in high school at the time and would "babysit" Chuck, Jim & Tommy whenever they came for a visit. Since that time, it was such a joy to hear "Timberline" perform. Unfortunately, that was several years ago and I truly wish I would have kept in touch with them. I can't stop listening to the "Grateful" video. My heartfelt sympathy to Pam, Chuck and Kristi & Tommy and Angela. I know Jim is sending his love to you from above. May all of you feel Gods' presence, during this most difficult time.

@Liddy Steadman Lind: was your father the famous knee surgeon, in Denver?

If so, our family business used to work on his car.

I've been binging on Jim's music, and just being alternatively saddened by his loss, and uplifted by his gift.

I am also grateful he got reunited with JD's 212 Guild, which I was lucky enough to have played.

Sorry to hear of Mr Salestrom´s passing. His music played a large role in my life during my early twenties. It was wonderful to hear him again a few years ago in Lake Wales and to meet his gracious wife Pam. I know that he and John are doing what they loved best in heaven.

When i think of Jim Salestrom i have to smile - it's not only cause whenever one saw Jim he was smiling, but mainly cause of all the joy he brought to anyone he encountered; not just long-term friends but many, many people who got to see him perform; was there a performer who enjoyed singing more than James Salestrom? I doubt it. He radiated good vibes that left all who encountered him feeling so much better for the experience.

I was very lucky and blessed to experience Jim's magic first hand being able to witness - and bask in his amazing talent - over a 40 year career of performing that included representing our country, around the World, at SKI USA events; being a featured entertainer at my Ski Shows; being the heart of the annual John Denver tribute concerts in Aspen - as well as making so many other gatherings special (like my Birthday party)

Jim Salestrom leaves so many great memories and a great legacy of being a joyous, sincer, heartfelt human; a really great person, a role model for how to live ones life. We are all the better for having known Jim and having him in our lives. I know we'll be singing, and skiing, one day again, together in, as the song goes: THE SWEET BY AND BY. And when we see Jim i know he'll be there greeting us all with a big Smile!
With Love and respect for all the Salestrom's - Bernie Weichsel

I was lucky enough to have been a 4th generation of Summit County where we were graced with having Jim join us in our lives along the Blue River. One of my favorite songs of Jim's. I can see it now, he and John Denver's voices joined in harmony with Mark and Roberta Fiester in attendance at the feet of our lord.

Discovered Jim and Timberline back in the 70's. The dad of one of my high school friends had taught Jim in Kearney. I believe it was the summer of 81 when Timberline played a concert at the auditorium in Hastings and due to the connection with his former teacher, my friends and I were able to meet Jim and the rest of the band. Will never forget it. I still regularly play my Timberline album. What a talent. Jim will be greatly missed!!!!

I first met Jim through my friend, Ken Miller. I was blown away by his voice, songs, and musicianship. I was fortunate to get to perform with Jim all over the country, singing harmony with him and playing
guitar. Performing with Jim was one of the best musical experiences of my life and I will always cherish the memories. He was a kind and giving person and always made me feel valued and appreciated and through my time playing with Jim I met so many interesting people and incredible musicians. Rest in peace, Jim, and know that you are loved and appreciated.

To share all my memories would take a lifetime.

So here's a few....
It all started back at Silverthorne Elementary School with Becky Barnes. You sang multiple shows there. You even helped us write 2 songs per grade level and record it. (~1989). The joy that came from singing "We're Goin' to the Zoo" as a whole school- priceless! And then bringing this song to my daughter about 11 years ago. We'd sing every time we went to the zoo. She was able to witness it in action at a concert at the silverthorne pavilions about 7 years ago.

Another fond memory was you helping with Summit Singers (1994-1996) at the high school. We again raised money together for our trips to Europe.

I first me Jim in Aspen at one of the John Denver tributes. He was so easy to get to know and he always had that great smile on his face. I saw him perform in many different places over the years, Breckenridge, Frisco and of course Aspen. I will always remember those red cowboy boots that he wore. I can also still hear Molly Weaver saying, "let's hear it for Jimmy Salestrom". My prayers go out to his family at this time. He was a big Teddy Bear and I'll always remember that smile and I was glad to have known him as a friend. I have his music on my iPod and although he is gone, his music will be played in my car with fond memories. RIP!!!!

Thinking I would major in music someday, I spent a lot of time in the High School music department, admiring Jim's talent. He was a grounded, stable guy, who smiled a lot and took time to acknowledge me, an underclassman... a light in the halls of time at Kearney High School!

My first experience with Jim was at KSC in the late 1970´s when he played there. His music touched my soul. Many years later, after I´d lost my Timberline album I cherished, I ran into very late one night at the Bullock hotel in Deadwood SD. We visited awhile and reminisced. I explained I´d lost his album. He said "excuse me" and left for 10 minutes. When he came back he had a CD of the album he gave me. Just a genuine human being and a genuine talent that seemed very happy and seemed to feel lucky he chose his path. My heartfelt condolences to his friends and family. I will miss him too.

Jim sang with both of my boys at the Broadmoor show for years and we all talked with him often. Talented, kind and down to Earth, he was a true gentleman. I will hear "Bristlecone Pine" in my sleep and think of him throughout the holiday season as well as his family.

I first heard Jim sing at Little Bo's in Lincoln Nebraska in the 70's then in 1989 he sent me a tape and proposed playing at our hotel in Deadwood South Dakota.. we formed a fast friendship with our mutual home state as our link, but soon discovered the love of family and friends to also be common. He was and remains the most joyful, kindest person i have ever known. Everyone felt that Jim was their best friend. He introduced his music friends to Deadwood SD and today that town owes him a huge debt of gratitude for the introduction of outdoor music festivals which have become so important to the community. I didn't get to see Jim in recent years but we kept in touch. The extreme love that has been poured out to him in the last few days from hundreds of friends just demonstrates how deeply he touched us all. We will love you forever Jim. Mary L. Schmit
