Myron Chester "Mike" Barner

July 25, 1939 - July 30, 2025

Myron Chester "Mike" Barner, 85, of North Platte, passed away on June 30, 2025, at his home.

He was born the seventh of eight children on July 25, 1939, to Chester and Edith (Utterback) Barner in Stapleton.

Mike grew up in Stapleton and attended Baker Rural School and Stapleton Public School. He graduated from Stapleton High School in the class of 1958. Mike attended McCook Community College. Mike served in the United States Navy from 1961-64 aboard the USS Coral Sea. He married Janice L. Wever on Dec. 12, 1965, at First Christian Church in North Platte. After many years as a conductor for the Union Pacific Railroad, Mike retired in 2001. With a true servant's heart, Mike volunteered in a variety of ways for The Salvation Army for over 30 years.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Edith Barner; in-laws, Jim and Marie Wever; and other family members.

Survivors include wife, Janice L. "Jan" Barner of North Platte; daughters, Julie (Ryan) Smith of Sidney and Lisa (Brandon) Cool of Kearney; grandchildren, McKade Smith, and Drennan, Haikan, and Sivney Cool; his brother, Byron (Elaine) Barner of Lincoln; brother-in-law, Jim Wever; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Deb and Neill Thompson; bonus family, Kenny, Natalie, Kord, and Neela Furrow; and numerous other nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

Memorials are suggested to The Salvation Army Food Pantry-North Platte, KJLT, or Bethel Evangelical Free Church. Online condolences may be shared at adamsswanson.com.

Burial is at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Fort McPherson National Cemetery, near Maxwell. Service follows the burial at 11:30 a.m. at the Bethel Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Geoff Safford and Pastor Dave Logsdon officiating. Visitation is from noon to 7 p.m. Monday, July 7, at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

I knew his as Uncle Myron. He was always kind and friendly and willing to lend a helping hand. I remember his as being handy and often building things for family and friends. I’m sure he touched a lot of lives and will be missed by many. Very sorry for your loss
