Elmo Neff Obituary


Elmo Ray Neff Jr., 78, of Stephens City, VA, passed away on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Winchester Medical Center.

Sonny was born in 1947 in Winchester, VA, and he was the son of the late Elmo Ray "Silm" Neff Sr. and Mildred Lee Neff. He was owner and President of ER Neff Excavating. Sonny enjoyed racing cars at Winchester Speedway and was owner of 4N and 4J racing teams. He and his wife, Clara Groveen, enjoyed being involved with antique cars.

He is survived by his wife, Clara Groveen, whom he married on February 19, 1966; sons, Jeff Neff (Shannon), Todd Neff (Chrissy); grandchildren, Brittany, Sean, Mikeal, Colleen, Jacob and Allison; great-granddaughter, Lilly; sister, Libby Ramey; and brother, John Neff Sr.

In addition to his parents, Sonny is preceded in death by his son, Elmo "Ray" Neff III, and sisters, Jenny Clem and Debbie Furley.

A visitation will be held for Sonny on Thursday, August 14, 2025, from 6pm to 8pm, with a service to be conducted the following day, Friday, August 15, 2025, all held at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Interment will be in Fairview Church Cemetery in Stephens City. Officiating will be Pastor John Lock.
