Harry Jones Obituary

Staff Sergeant Harry C. "Chuck" Jones, 79, of Woodstock, departed this life peacefully, with his family by his side, on Saturday, December 24, at Consulate of Woodstock.

Chuck was born on May 24th, 1932 in Herndon, Iowa, son of the late Paul and Helen Sexton Jones.

Upon graduation from Guthrie High School, Chuck enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Upon completion of basic training in San Diego, California, his battalion, unbeknownst to them, was deployed to Korea. Chuck served with the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine division at the Chosin Reservoir, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Korean Service Award. Chuck was later stationed at Quantico, Virginia and then in Hawaii where he served as Military Police. He completed his military career at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina in 1960. Upon his return to Shenandoah County, Chuck served in the Air National Guard at Martinsburg, West Virginia and was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force on April 6, 1973.

Chuck is remembered by many as the owner/operator of the Woodstock Billiards Parlor, Agent for Nationwide Insurance, Salesperson at Muhlenburg Motors and Men's Department Manager at Leggett's Department Store in Woodstock. In his later years, Chuck was operator of the Woodstock Gulf Station and owner of C &M Auto Parts in Woodstock, from which he retired.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Marie Laughlin Alexander Jones of Woodstock; daughters, Jennifer Jones Funk (Michael), Jolie Jones Johnson, Judith Jones Smoot (Larry), Jania Jones Fravel (Mike), and Lloydine Jones Morgan (Walt); son, Keith Alexander (Susan); grandchildren, Mary Catherine and Nicholas Funk, Jeremy T. Miller (Michelle), Blake Johnson (Leslie), Sean Johnson (Ashley), Kaitlin Smoot, Wesley Fravel (Laurie), Paul M. Fravel (Abbey), Codie Fravel, Melinda Morgan (Josh), Michelle Morgan (Josh), Devin Alexander and Courtney A. Painter (Ryan); great-grandchildren, Carter, Kayden, Kaylen, Orion, Aurora, Adkin, Travis, Trent and Isaiah. One of six children, Chuck was the last remaining immediate member of the Jones family from Iowa. Chuck is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their children whom he dearly loved. He is also survived by brother and sisters-in-law, Thelma Laughlin, Bernard and Sarah Jane Stokes and Thelma LaRue.

Chuck was active in many community organizations. He was quite the fast pitch baseball player, little league umpire, member of the Woodstock Fire Department, Life Member of the American Legion Post 199, Woodstock Moose, where he was affectionately referred to as " Lucky Chucky", and the VFW. Chuck was also a life member of the D.A.V. Chosin Few. Chuck was instrumental in organizing the Woodstock Rescue Squad for which he was awarded Distinguished Service Award from the Woodstock Jaycees, of which he was a "Rooster". Chuck organized the placing of the military memorial wall located in front of the new courthouse in Woodstock and he was also involved in the placing of the American flag at the Shenandoah County Park. Chuck was a loyal Woodstock River Bandits fan and supporter of Shenandoah County High School athletics.

Chuck was an avid fisherman. His final wish was granted this past November when he took his last fishing trip to the bay with all of his "fishing buddies".

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 3rd at the Woodstock Moose Lodge from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Chuck would have wanted everyone to get home in time to cheer on the Hokies. A memorial service with Military Honors is planned for Saturday, January 7th at 1:30 p.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 127 East High Street, Woodstock. Pastor Nate Robinson officiating. A private graveside service will be held in the Spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Shenandoah County Relay For Life Foundation, St. Judes Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are being handled by Valley Funeral Service, Bowmans Crossing.

Daddy,
It just doesn't seem possible that you are gone. It will seem strange to call the house and not have you answer and tell Marie "its Jania Jean"! Thanks for your unwavering love and support and for the example of what a man should be. Always in my heart! I love you.
