Yvonne Irene Wightman

Yvonne Irene Wisman Wightman, age 86, passed away peacefully at her home July 14, 2025.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joe B. Wightman; mother, Julia Sherman Moore; stepfather, Michael Moore; father, James E. Wisman; stepmother, Lois W. Wisman; brother, William Wisman; and sister-in-law, Virginia Jones.

She is survived by her son Byron D. Wightman and wife, Karen of Edinburg, VA; daughter, Julia A. Wightman and wife, Betsy Varnedoe of Pasadena, MD; grandchildren, Augustus (Gus) Wightman of Edinburg, VA, Olivia Wightman of Woodstock, VA; brother, Michael A. Moore and wife, Monica of Converse, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Yvonne graduated from Woodstock High School in 1957 and entered Winchester Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1960 as a Registered Nurse. She worked for many years at Woodstock Memorial Hospital as a surgical floor, Intensive Care, and Recovery room nurse. After leaving the hospital she spent 8 years with the Medical Society of Virginia Review Organization.

In her free time, she enjoyed quilting, making rugs and sewing. Her braided rugs and hand stitched quilts adorn many homes in several different states. She was an avid gardener and took pride in the many different flowers and plants she grew both indoors and outdoors.

She and her husband Joe, whom she married on March 13, 1958, loved spending time at their mountain property (The Bowman Fields) relaxing and entertaining friends.

In her later years she enjoyed being a grandmother to Gus and Olivia. Her motto was "What happens at Grandma's house stays at Grandma's house."

The service will be Wednesday, July 23, at 11:00 am, at Valley Funeral Service, in Edinburg, VA. The family will receive friends and guests from 9:00 am until the start of the service. A time of fellowship will be held at the Edinburg VFW Post 2447 upon the conclusion of the service.

The family would like to thank Yvonne's caregivers, Tammy Cooper, Susan Stewart, and Rebecca Rakes, along with the many fine nurses and assistants with Blue Ridge Hospice. They were truly a blessing over the past three weeks.
