James Heavener Obituary

Lt. Colonel James D. Heavener passed away at his residence September 28, 2016, at the age of 85 due to an apparent heart attack. He was born September 22, 1931 and was raised in Gap Mills, West Virginia. After graduating college James enlisted in the Air Force Reserves followed by 22 years active duty as a pilot and instructor pilot and was finally awarded the aeronautical rating of command pilot. After retiring from the Air Force, Jim continued his flight career as a contract pilot for several charter flight companies and industrial corporations. After finally retiring and moving to Fort Walton Beach, Jim and his beloved wife Una were very active in their church as well as several civilian and military social organizations. James was especially active with the Bud Day Flight #61, order Daedalians where he served as the organizations Chaplain. James and Una both loved to travel and had many great adventures in the U.S. and abroad. Jim was the type of man who made friends with everyone he met. His keen sense of humor was always a welcome addition to any conversation. He was an avid and highly skilled bridge player. He will be missed by all who knew him and appreciated his fine manly qualities and comradeship. Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Una and three devoted step-daughters as well as his sister Betty Hotlenstein. Jim's choice was to be cremated which will be followed by a celebration of his life to be held on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 12:00pm. The Celebration will be held at The First Christian Church located at 201 Saint Mary Avenue in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. His inurnment will take place at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors and will be held at a later date. Jim will be sorely missed at QBs, Daedalians, and our Wednesday morning breakfasts. He was the most adventurous traveler I ever met and I'm sure he is on a great adventure even now in God's hands.
