Mary Burnette Obituary

A quite, gracious lady, Mrs. Burnette spent 30 years in the classroom. She graduated from Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University in 1951. Immediately after graduating, she was recruited from Walton County to oversee the start-up the Okaloosa County segregated school, even though she had been offered a position in Miami, Fla. She became the first African-American teacher in Okaloosa County.
In the beginning, it was just Mrs. Burnette, the principal and 50 students, of which they taught all grades. Later on, the schools were known as Brooks Elementary and W.E. Combs High Schools, which became integrated institutions in the late 1960's. Mrs. Burnette was instrumental in recruiting administrators and instructors, along with employing parents as teacher's aids in the classrooms. She was also honored for commencing and serving 22 years with the Okaloosa County Head Start Program from 1967 to 1989. Mrs. Burnette always tried to instill educational values as the key to economic success and, more importantly, being respected by all races. Accordingly to her son, Dr. Daarel Burnette, "Mom would always lecture me, your education attainment will be the foundation to obtaining prosperity and keeping-up in our global universe."
Mrs. Burnette and her late husband, Col. A. Burnette, raised three sons, along with countless god and foster kids from the neighborhood. Upon retirement, she traveled throughout the country in her recreation vehicle and globally to South Africa. When her health began to decline in 2002, she retreated to the Bob Hope Village and eventually, the Hawthorne House.
In January 2004, Mrs. Burnette was chosen as the Grand Marshal in the local parade celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The chairperson stated, "We chose one of the pioneers who has truly made a difference in our community to be our Grand Marshall. Mrs. Burnette was both an exemplary and superior educator in Okaloosa County that elevated the affluence of a myriad of Fort Walton Beach citizens."
Mrs. Burnette leaves to cherish her beautiful and loving memories, three sons, Cornel, Daarel and Marlon; special children, Jerry Payne, Karen Jefferson, Beatrice Tippens and Oscar Montgomery; and a host of grandchildren, family and friends.
Services will held on Saturday, March 23, at 9 a.m. at Beulah Baptist Church, 109 McGriff Street, N.E., Fort Walton Beach, FL, with the inurnment taking place at Magnolia Cemetery, DeFuniak Springs, Fla. at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Mary E. Burnette / W.E. Combs Scholarship Fund, c/o Dorothy Curry, 5651 Boehm Dr. Fairfield, Ohio 45014.

One of her sons, Marlon and I were classmates at Brooks Elementary, Max Bruner Jr. Jr. High, Fort Walton Beach High , and friends on Facebook. I knew her husband and her other two sons. She was always nice when I would visit their home.

Mrs. Burnette was amazing and extraordinary as a teacher, accepting only the best from her students. Mediocre was not in her vocabulary and she never had a problem with visiting students at home. Discipline and structure were required daily. Rest in Peace and Power.

To the Family of Ms Mary E. Burnette

The great loss of your loved one was a great loss to the community as well. A legend, she was. Because of her love and respect for people, she carried the weight of many on her shoulders with immeasurable balance. Remembering the times that I was blessed to visit with her at the Hawthorn house, she would always start our conversation off with a transmissible smile and ask; what is going on in the community? Most of the time, she knew more about what was going on and I found myself being enlighten. If you ever had the need for a good conversation about anything, she was the foundation. Her inspiration and thoughtfulness were cornerstones for many that led to great achievements. For this cause, her legacy will live on and serves as a constant reminder that we can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us even in the mist of our sorrows and pains. May the Lord give you comfort and peace through the precious memories that are deep rooted in your hearts.

What wonderful memories I have of Mrs. Mary Burnette! Even though I was not taught in a formal setting by Mrs. Burnette, I learned so much from her while living in the community and working in the school system. We both lived on "Burnette Street" and I went to school with her sons. She was an educator, a role model, a community leader and a wonderful example and inspiration to all that knew her. Our lives have been touched and truly enriched by this wonderful and caring person and we're all better for knowing her. My prayers go out to Cornel, Daarel, Marlon and the rest of the Family during this difficult time. She will be missed.

Ditto to my classmates comments. Additionally, when my mother passed away in 1959, Mrs. Burnette stepped in to be the mother that I no longer had and we spent many afternoons together as she helped to ease me and my siblings (school age) into a new place in life. She remained in that position even last year as we celebrated her, her birthday and her legacy to the children of Fort Walton Beach. I salute her and all the wonderful teachers that were instrumental to our early childhood, formative years and our professional careers. Family remember that God gives to all of us strength for the difficult days ahead. Love you one and all.

Mrs. Burnette was a great educator, community leader, mother figure, role model, advisor and great person. She always was available to impart wisdom and encouragement to every student she would encounter, even if the student was not in one of her classes. I believe I was in the 3rd grade when Mrs. Burnette first became my teacher. Even at that age it was evident she really enjoyed teaching and that she wanted all of us to always do our best work and to be successful in life. She would be my instructor in 4th and 5th grades also and life teacher. She loved all of us students and we knew it. Once we graduated from high school and went into the world whether to college, military or employment she always wanted to know how we were doing. And yes continued to encourage us to be successful in our lives.
