CLEOPATRA RUMAS

Cleopatra "Cleo" Rumas EAST CHICAGO, IN - Cleopatra "Cleo" Rumas, age 98 of East Chicago, passed away on April 30, 2018. Cleo was born on December 31, 1919 in East Chicago. She attended Franklin Elementary School and graduated from East Chicago Washington High School in 1938. She later graduated from Business College in Hammond, IN and went on to become an executive secretary for Union Carbide Chemicals and Plastics. In 1951 she boarded a ship headed for Athens, Greece where she worked for the U.S. Embassy for one year. During that time she also worked as an interpreter for the motion picture "Guns of Navarone" starring Anthony Quinn. Upon her return to the U.S. she worked again for Union Carbide in Chicago, then as a legal secretary in East Chicago, and finally as a secretary for Cape's House in Hammond until the age of 80. Cleo is survived by her loving nephew David Rumas, wife Justine, two great nephews, Jeremy and Nicholas (Shin-ae), and one great-great nephew, Owen. Cleo was an active member of the Highland Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. She will be greatly missed by her loving caregiver, Lena Irene Mackay, fondly called Miss Africa by Cleo, and her many, many friends - of all ages. Friends are invited to visit with family at HILLSIDE FUNERAL HOME, 8941 Kleinman Road, Highland, IN on Monday, May 7, 2018 from 3:30 -7:30 PM. Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at Hillside Funeral Home at 10:30 AM with nephew David Rumas officiating.
