Danny McDowell Obituary

Danny McDowell

Jul 13, 1944 - Oct 9, 2024

Hobart, IN - It is with great sadness that the children of Danny Albert McDowell announce his passing on Wednesday, October 9th, 2024, at the age of 80.

Danny will be lovingly remembered by his surviving children, Timothy McDowell, Sandra Glass and Danielle (Aaron Stout) McDowell; grandchildren, Marcus (Brynn) McDowell, Matthew (Jessica) McDowell, Damian (Sandra) Glass and Crystal Glass; great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Kaelynn, Ethan, Dean, Mason, Reagan, Alex, Jasmyn, Camdan, and Renlee. A beloved sister-in-law, Barbara Maxine Cole also survives.

Danny was pre-deceased by his cherished wife of 56 years, Margaret Ann Farmer McDowell; his birth mother, Katherine Moore, and his loving adoptive parents, John and Beauton McDowell. Also, his brother John D. McDowell.

Danny was born on July 13th, 1944. He lived with his biological mother Katherine Moore for the first year of his life and then he was placed in an adoption orphanage to give him a better chance at life. He was adopted by his adoring parents, John and Beauton McDowell. He was raised in Oakland, Tennessee and spent most of his very enjoyable childhood there. Danny was also very close to his many aunts and uncles. He briefly moved to Northwest Indiana during his late teenage years and went to Emerson High School in Gary, Indiana. Danny returned to Tennessee and joined the US Army and was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Margaret. Dan was married on June 15th, 1964, to Margaret Ann Farmer until her passing on January 21st, 2021. Together they created a genuinely happy life and had three children, Timothy James, Sandra Kay and Danielle Renee.

As for education and work, he graduated from Indiana University with his bachelor's degree in sociology. His minor was in philosophy. He worked at US Steel Gary for 36 years before happily retiring in 1998. He truly enjoyed every minute of retirement.

Danny was an accomplished and very well-known caver to the spelunking community. He was absolutely passionate about traveling and going on trips and writing trip reports, many of which were published. He loved nature, hiking, the Great Outdoors, plants and flowers, and beautiful natural scenery all over America. He loved trap and skeet shooting, he also collected coins and stamps and was an avid reader of all kinds of books. He never missed watching NFL football games when the Bears were playing. He really loved good food and desserts and cherished our frequent family get-togethers. He very much enjoyed talking and visiting with family and friends and he had the most awesome stories! Danny was the best kind of father; fun, kind, wise and inspiring. Additionally, Danny loved spending time with his beloved cat, Ollie.

Because of his having so many varied interests and hobbies, he was a member and affiliated with many organizations. He was a Fellow of the National Speleological Society (NSS), the Northern Indiana Grotto (NIG), the Saint Joseph Valley Grotto (SJVG), Windy City Grotto (WCG), Treasurer of the Goodfellow Coin Club, Shirley Heinze Land Trust, Friends of Robinson Lake, Orchid Hunters, Rare Flowers And Not So Rare Flower Finders, Occasional Bird Chasers Club, Nature Conservancy, Save The Dunes National Lakeshore, Indiana DNR Division Of Nature Preserve, and Lake County Parks. He volunteered at all the local prairies in Northern Indiana. He also volunteered for the NWI crisis intervention organization " The Hammond Hotline " from the early 80's until it shut down in 1989 and was able to help many people during his time on the hotline.

The family would like to acknowledge some of Danny's very closest friends that he was truly fortunate to have in his life. Jim and Shelly Reyome, you are the friends that became family. Nadia Kemp, you are dad's best friend and sidekick. You two were the dynamic duo. Joe Ontiveros, dad always looked forward to your monthly luncheon and visits. Tom Gruber, Tom DeCamp, Tony and Leslie Cunningham, Mark Deeble and Kristie Collins, these last few years you six made it possible repeatedly for dad to continue with his beloved traveling up until his last day. Literally. Dad was in good hands with you all.

Each of you were incredibly important to dad and he loved you very much.

Dad told us over and over, if he should ever die on one of his famous trips, he would die happy. He also said he hoped it would be in his sleep after a fantastic day of exploring. In the way that sometimes the best and most deserving people are granted their last wishes, our dad got his. He had a hard but very amazing trip out west in Utah and Colorado with some of his closest friends the "Two Toms". On his final day of the trip, he had a fantastic day and completed his bucket list. Then he went to sleep happy.

Tom Gruber and Tom DeCamp, you will never understand the gratitude that our family has for you. Thank you for making dad's last trip possible and his transition exactly the way he wanted. We love you both.

One last thing about our dad Danny. He loved a good obituary.

In lieu of flowers please make charitable contributions to The Nature Conservancy or the Shirley Heinze Land Trust.

After reading his obituary I found out how many activities he was involved in. I am truly, amazed and impressed. I knew him as a member and treasurer of the goodfellow coin club. He did the job for over 10 years I believe. He was very good at it and was well versed in Numismatics. Always willing to share his knowledge with anyone who asked or showed any interest in coins or currency. The club will miss his imput. My condolences to his family.

My condolences to your family and the many people that loved Danny. I was so sad when I heard of his passing but happy when I heard it was just the way he wanted to go. I was Danny’s home Respiratory Therapist and loved my visits with him and Ollie every few months. I would make sure I had extra time for his appointments because we always sat at his kitchen table and swapped stories. We would, of course, talk about places we had travelled, the last Eclipse, what plans he had for the next few months(until my next visit), and steel mills ( I worked in a steel mill for 10 yrs and my family worked in the region mills). I adored him and Ollie. I always looked forward to my visits with him and hearing him yell “Come on in, Tiff” when I knocked on the kitchen door. I visited him right before his trip and he told me what the agenda was and what they planned to see. He said he thought this may be his last trip. I know he will be missed my his loving family and friends but he LIVED his life to the very end and is now reunited with his wife and those who passed before him.

Dan & I met spelunking in the 1970s. I was attempting to explore every cave in the book "100 Caves of Indiana." Though he appreciated my efforts and had explored most of them himself, he inspired me to head south into Kentucky caves which were far more exciting. I'm sure he inspired many others to take on new and more distant challenges.

Dan and I were caving friends back in the 70s & 80s and enjoyed caving at some of the midwestern caving events. Dan's NSS#12621RE FE which mean he had been caving long enough to have mud in his blood. His spirit is finally free to those hidden passages. May God bless his family and friends with good memories, Amen.

Dan and I caved together for several years, including the Porter's and Dunbar projects. I had a phone call from him a few months back...chatted for better part of an hour catching up. I don't recall him mentioning anything about his wife? Was that before she passed? My condolences to all of you.

Dan was a true friend to all of the members of The Friends of Robinson Lake helping with the mission of the group to work with the Hobart Park Department to " To preserve the natural beauty of the park and promote awareness of park and promote park activities and uses for families and other groups."

On a personal level Dan visited our property which we have placed in an Indiana DNR Classified Forest and Wildlands Program. Much to our surprise Dan pointed out several plants and flowers we had not identified. He demonstrated and exemplified a love of all things natural and native to our area.

"Dan Dan the Orchid Man." That's what many of his friends at Shirley Heinze Land Trust called him. He was a big man with a big heart. When I first became involved in land conservation, Dan went out of his way to invite me to join him on his botanizing trips to find rare orchids in out of the way places. He was a great teacher, and he really cared about saving the wild places. Dan didn't hesitate to take on the tough chores on stewardship workdays; he was stronger than most of his colleagues a third his age. He aspired to visit all the 300+ state nature preserves in Indiana. I don't know if he ever made it, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did. Dan's death is a great loss.

Dan was truly an inspiration to me. He was a teacher too, his memory for botanical sites was phenomenal and we spent many happy hours together botanizing around the state. Just the two of us sometimes, but also with a group of like minded orchid hunters. He was always cheerful, even when it was obvious that he wasn't in the best physical health in recent years. He was a dear friend and I will miss him deeply. My sincere condolences to his children Danielle, Sandy, and Tim.

Friends of Robinson Lake and Friends of Fred Rose Park appreciate Dan's many years of attention to these Hobart Parks, helping to protect them and take care of them. He was the most pleasant and interesting person to be around, he always had a good story, and he worked hard. One of his pet proects was the Spring Lake Izaak Walton League's prairie, the highest native plant biodiversity site in Hobart, which he discovered in the rough at a coin club meeting there. He nurtured that prairie until it was recognized as a great example of the rare black soil prairie. Dan took time to make the rounds each year of rare plant locations in the region, all over Indiana, and other nearby states. His favorite was the orchids, which earned him the nickname Dan, Dan, the orchid man.
