David Schoon Obituary

David L. Schoon

Oct 29, 1940 - Sep 12, 2025

Lowell, Ind. - David L. Schoon, aged 84, passed away Friday, September 12, 2025.

David was a musician nearly his whole life and a chemistry/physics teacher for all of his week-day working career.

He graduated from Gary's Horace Mann High School in 1958, earned both a bachelor's and then a master's degree from Indiana University Bloomington, and then later a bachelor's degree in music from Valparaiso University.

From age 18 to age 83, he served several northwest Indiana churches as church organist, retiring this last September from that position at First United Methodist Church in Lowell, Indiana. Previous to that, he had served as organist at churches in Gary and Crown Point. David was an active member and had served as dean of the Northwest Indiana chapter of the American Guild of Organists. For several summers, David played the violin in the pit orchestra for the Ross Summer Music Theatre. In addition to his instrumental talents, David sang for many years with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra Chorus, and for more than 40 years, with the Messiah Choir at the Michigan City Presbyterian Church.

For 44 years, David taught high school physics and chemistry first at Gary's Lew Wallace High School and later at Crown Point High School. After retirement, he then taught physics part-time at Calumet Christian School in Griffith, Indiana.

He was a member of Lake Hills Baptist Church and in his younger years, a member of the Gary Masonic Lodge, where he served both as organist and as an officer rising to Master of the lodge in 1976. After that lodge closed, he transferred his membership to Colfax Lodge of Lowell, Indiana, which will conduct a Masonic service at the funeral home Thursday evening at 6:30 pm.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Vivian Schoon. He is survived by his two brothers, Kenneth and Ronald; four nephews, and their families. Friends can meet with the family at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8941 Kleinman Road (one block south of Ridge Road) in Highland, IN on Thursday, September 18, 2025 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. His funeral service will be at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 8955 Columbia Ave., Munster, IN, 46321 on Friday, September 19 at 2:00 p.m. Interment at Ridge Lawn Cemetery next to his parents and grandparents.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the church or charity of choice.

Yesterday

Ken & Ron and families, I worked with Dave at CPHS for 15 years where I was a secretary. His classroom was across the hall from the office where I always kept a candy jar for teachers as a 'thank you' for their constant efforts to shaping life-long learners and well-rounded students. Dave enjoyed stopping by for his treat each day, and I enjoyed talking with him. We also shared a love of music and travel. He will be missed. He is face-to-face with Christ now, where all of us one day hope to be.

Mr. Schoon was one of those rare and special persons who quietly went about his work and cared enough to leave an enduring positive impression on those who were paying attention. I was unaware of his vast musical talent as well as the depth of his faith, things that now make me respect him all the more. Sadly, I did not get the opportunity to be mentored by him when I attended Wallace, for I am certain that he would have made the same impact on my life as he did on so many others. Well done, Mr. Schoon, and forever may you rest in peace.

Twenty years, perhaps, teaching at Lew Wallace with Mr. Schoon...Two things I remember: (1) Total commitment to imparting
knowledge, especially in a lively manner, and (2) always a smile when he said "hello"...

My condolences to the family! David Schoon was my chemistry and physics teacher at Lew Wallace High School 1983-1984. He made a profound impact in my life and challenged me with what he saw in me in order to reach higher goals in life. Now I pass what I learned with him onto my grandchildren! I'm blessed to have been a student of his!

Mr Schoon was an excellent physics instructor. But more importantly, he was a kind and generous man. He was instrumental and helping me gain admission into college and helped me personally during many difficult times in high school. God bless him.

I was also a member at Central Baptist Church many years ago and remember David playing the organ and also singing in a quartet with my brother Paul and Jim Whitmire. He was so talented.

Mr. Schoon was my chemistry teacher at Lew Wallace (1982-1983); he was very unique and deliberate in his lesson plans. I learned a great deal in his class. I wish that I had taken his physics class too. I believe that he shared his love of music with our class. He was truly a gift to Northwest IN.

Sorry to hear about the loss of David. David played organ at Central Baptist Church in Hobart where I attended at the time. He played beautifully music.
