Earl Grieger Obituary

"BUZZ" EARL G. GRIEGER VALPARAISO, IN Buzz passed away at the age of 74 on Friday, September 26, 2008. He was born in Valparaiso on November 9, 1933. He is survived by his wife, Valeurie (nee Deckro) of Valparaiso; children: Lynn Grieger (Mike Ryan) of Vermont, Diane (Grieger) Parks of Texas and Gail Grieger of Michigan; grandchildren: Duncan and Nathan Ryan, Jackson Parks, and Meredith and Rowan Ashton; sisters: Darline Wieland of Ohio and Sue Grieger (Jack Jackson) of Minnesota; brothers-in-law: Steve (Sherry) Deckro of Illinois and John (Mary Jo) Deckro of Florida; sister-in-law, Kathy Black of Indianapolis. Preceded in death by wife, Shirley (nee Michael) in 1992; parents: Earl L. and Gladys (nee Auble) Grieger. Buzz graduated from Jackson Township High School in 1951. He received his B.A. from Indiana State University in 1957 and his M.A. from Indiana University. Buzz served in the U.S. Army from September 1953 to June 1955. Buzz was a teacher and coach at Boone Grove from 1957 to 1967; a teacher, coach and administrator at North Newton from 1967 to 1969; served as president of Grieger Motors from 1969 until his retirement in 2002; and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Valparaiso. He was an avid sailor, fly fisherman and tennis player for many years. Buzz's greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Friends may visit with the family on Monday, September 29, 2008 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Dykes Funeral Home, 2305 N. Campbell Street, Valparaiso, IN. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church, 103 N. Franklin, Valparaiso, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Porter County, 354 Jefferson, Valparaiso, IN 46383 or the Porter County Community Foundation, P.O. Box 302, Valparaiso, IN 46384. Arrangements by Dykes Funeral Home, Inc. (219) 462-3125.

I first met him at Boone Grove when I was in 2nd grade and then found out he was Dad's first cousin. That year the school sang their own version of the 12 days of Christmas I don't remember how it went but the name Buzz was mentioned alot. He will be missed by many.
