Jerome Janiga Obituary
Jerome "Jerry" Janiga, age 77, of Crown Point, IN passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at Community Hospital in Munster, IN. Jerry is survived by his loving wife: Betty Janiga; three children: John (Nellie) Janiga; Susan (John) Kelly; and Michael (Marita) Janiga; seven grandchildren: Brooke (John) Schramm; Michael, Lauren and Sophia Kelly; Amy (Chris) Hively; Joseph Janiga; and Karen Malaga; two great grandchildren: Will and Allison Hively; brother, Robert "Bob" (Carole) Janiga; and dearest friend of many including: Tony Lucito; Don Enloe; and Mickey Miller. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents: John and Martha Janiga. Jerry retired from the Calumet City Police Department as a Lieutenant Commander after 28 years of service. He had worked as a Patrol Commander, Juvenile Officer and also held the honor of serving as Commissioner of the Calumet City Police & Fire Department. Jerry was a Past President of the F.O.P. Lodge #1 in Calumet City, IL and was a 50 year member, receiving an award at the F.O.P. National Convention in Pittsburg, PA. Currently, Jerry is a member of the Calumet City Pension Board; Illinois Police Association; Fraternal Order of Eagles # 1354 in Ludington, MI; Loyal Order of the Moose #260 in Crown Point; and Sons of the American Legion Post #20 in Crown Point. Jerry enjoyed playing cards and was an avid fisherman, often traveling to Ludington, MI to cast his reels. His talents also included being able to play a harmonica, accordion and piano and he occasionally performed as a member of "The Band" at the Calumet City VFW. Friends may visit with the family on Monday, January 4, 2016 at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre, 606 E 113th Ave, Crown Point, IN 46307 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral Prayers will take place at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at 10:45 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at 11:30 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 321 E. Joliet St., Crown Point, IN with Fr. Pat Kalich officiating.
