Joan Froman, 92, formerly of Ogden Dunes, IN, passed away on March 21, 2026. Joan born in Orofino, Idaho with parents Leone and Jesse and sisters Alene and Jackie. She loved the outdoors and spent her childhood camping with family in remote lumber areas, riding horses and exploring western forests. The family lived in Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Alaska.
Joan graduated from University of Oregon and started her career in Juneau, Alaska. In Alaska Joan met her husband Chuck and were married a few months later in Ann Arbor, Michigan sharing 69 years of married life together.
Joan and Chuck first lived in Midland, MI for 14 years and had five children in rapid succession. The family was active with swimming, skiing, fishing and camping. In 1970 they moved to Ogden Dunes, IN where they were involved with a beach community on Lake Michigan for 27 years. The family spent many weekends at their cottage in Hoxeyville, MI exploring the woods, mushroom foraging, canoeing the Pine River and skiing at Caberfae.
After her children were all at colleges Joan started the Sandpiper Nursery School at Ogden Dunes Community Church teaching 3 and 4 year olds for many years. When Joan and Chuck retired they split their years between a Florida condo and Michigan cottage and Joan became an active beachcomber and birdwatcher. Into their 80s Joan and Chuck were actively birdwatching, golfing, skiing, canoeing, biking, swimming, world travels and sharing time with their five children, daughter and son in laws, and grandchildren.
Joan is survived and deeply missed by her loving children: Chuck (Jo Ann) Froman, Gayle (David) Froman, Elise (Thom) Skora, Aleta (John) Froman-Goodrich, Tom (Jeni) Froman; grandchildren: Anna (Janelle) Littlehale, Hilary (Nick) Froman, Hallah Skora, Sam Littlehale, Elias Skora, Olivia (Dave) Pusinski, Hannah (Liz) Froman; 5 great grandchildren; sisters Alene and Jackie; numerous extended family. She is preceded in death by husband Chuck; parents Leone and Jesse; grandson Zachary.
A celebration of Joan's life will be held privately by family.
