There are so many memories... but mostly I remember the twinkle in his eye as he was hatching a practical joke. Once, in the summer of 2004 I think, a bunch of us had lunch at the River restaurant. I was with my daughters, Hana and Trinka, both still in elementary school. He nonchalantly gathered all the rolls from our plates. As we were leaving, we followed him to the patio--"I'm just gonna feed the little fish' he said as he threw in the bunch, and the feeding frenzy began. Course, he wasn't looking at the fish! He was looking at their faces as they watched in horror, then they got into it too! I remember how welcome I felt whenever I was there, and how much I always wanted to visit the farm when I stayed with my Grandma Cora. I can remember too how often he would come over there, have coffee and cake with Cora, sitting at the table discussing the state of the world or the state of the corn.He wasn't one for crocodile tears either, as I saw when my 11 year old daughter Hana had a run in with the rope in the barn (actually, it was the beam in the barn) and came in with a large raspberry on her shin. Jack looked at it, looked at her, and said "hmmm, I think you'll live". I did not have a strong father, and Jack was, to me, a model of what that was: strong, solid, and present. Thank you Jack, for being that man I could look up to (literally). "oh the heart that has loved never truly forgets
but as truly lives on to the close
as the sunflower turns on her God as He sets
the same look that she gave when He rose"

I didn't know your dear Jack, but I feel privileged to have read of his life! Thank you for sharing so many details that paint a picture of this seemingly humble, courageous, hard-working, creative, caring, community-minded soul! May you, his family, have God's peace as you continued to live out Jack's values and legacy!

We are sorry to hear of Jack's passing. His legacy will live on through his large family that reflect his values of hard work, kindness and civic duty. His ties to agriculture, and the family he leaves behind, bring to mind the Masanobu Fukuoka quote; "The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings". Jack and Mary Jane's cultivation was a good example of that.

I enjoyed visiting with both Mary Jane and Jack while I worked at the Farm Bureau office in Valparaiso. Knew both of them for many years. Good people.
