John Carter Obituary

JOHN OREN CARTER, M.D. HOBART, IN
John Oren Carter, M.D., born July 8, 1928 in Anderson, IN passed away at St. Mary Medical Center on April 26, 2011. John attended Muncie Central High School and from there joined the Navy at age 17. He was stationed in New York and San Diego and eventually was assigned to the medical corps as a corpsman. It was this experience that guided him to medicine. After leaving the Navy, John enrolled at Indiana University, Bloomington where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa after three years and enrolled in medical school. He graduated from I.U. Medical School in 1956 with Phi Beta Pi Honors. He met and married Charlene Riley in 1953 prior to beginning med school. In med school, John met his three dear friends who convinced him to come to the Region and completed his internship in Gary at Mercy Hospital. He then moved to Hobart where he initially went into solo practice. He then joined Lake George Medical Center in 1958 where he remained in practice until he passed away. John enjoyed fishing, golfing, coin collecting, working in his yard, and being with his family. He was an avid I. U. basketball and Brickie football fan. He loved his medical practice working alongside his two sons and being at the office visiting and caring for his patients. He delivered many children in Hobart. He was also a past President of St. Mary Medical Center and a longtime member of St. Bridget Church. Dr. Carter is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Charlene; three children: Dr. Mark (Cindy) Carter, MaryAnn "Mimi" (Jonathan "Jay") Herr both of Hobart; and Dr. John E. (Kim) Carter of Valparaiso; five grandchildren: Matthew, Jacob, Kaitlin Carter, Christine Herr and Riley Carter. He was preceded in death by his beloved granddaughter, Madi Carter; and his parents and sisters. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 9:15 a.m. from Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7th St., Hobart going to St. Bridget Church, 568 E. 2nd St., Hobart for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Dominic Bertino officiating. Entombment in Graceland Cemetery Mausoleum, Valparaiso. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Friday from 2:00-8:00 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home, Hobart. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation or Crosier Father and Brothers Missionaries. www.burnsfuneral.com

I was shocked to hear that Dr John had passed away. He has been my doctor for close to 50 years and I can't remember a time when I was sick that he wasn't around. When I was 8 and almost died, he was there. He was there for my parents during their health struggles and they both passed away in 2007. My heart goes out to the Carter family during this time. Words cannot express my appreciation for what Dr John did for me. Harrison L. Gunter (Hobart, IN)

Dr. Carter was such a wonderful man. He was the best Dr. we ever had. Once we left Indiana we measured our choice of Dr. by his bar. He told us one time he learned early on to listen to his patients because they usually knew what was wrong with them. We're so sorry to read of his passing and very blessed to have had him as our family Dr. He was very special to us. We send our prayers to your family.

Dear Carter family,

I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Carter was our longtime family doctor and friend to our family. He was such a sweet and caring man; always making everyone feel as if they were the most important patient at their visit. He was very kind and good to my mother, always trying to come up with some way to ease her pain and try to diagnose her mysterious ailment. He has always been there for my father as well through the years. The city of Hobart has lost a great man.

May the loving patriarch of a very special family rest in peace. His love and guidance as a doctor is only surpassed by his love of family, and he made his patients feel as if each was a member of that family. As the days and weeks pass, and as his family returns to life's routine, may each continue to feel comforted by the love and support of the extended family and friends.
