John Shotliff Obituary

JOHN HENRY SHOTLIFF JR. HEBRON, IN John Henry Shotliff Jr., 77 of Hebron, IN passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2014. John was born in Gary, IN on September 28, 1936 to Betty and John "Jack" Shotliff Sr. John proudly served our great Nation with the United States Army where he was a member of the 8th Army Band. A true inspiration with his many great musical talents, John tirelessly shared those talents as a Band Director for over 30 years to a countless number of students. The first 17 years of his teaching career were spent with the North Judson San Pierre High School and later moved to Hebron High School where he proudly retired in May 2001 with Director Emeritus status. During that time John led many Marching Bands, Jazz and Concert Bands, Pep Bands and award-winning groups to State Solo & Ensemble competition. John is preceded in death by his father, John "Jack" Shotliff Sr. and is survived by his loving mother, Betty Shotliff (Ashland, OR); brother, Terry Shotliff (Merrillville, IN); daughter, Joan (Glen) Bookwalter of Hebron; two incredibly special grandchildren: Gracie and Conner and several very special former students. In his retirement John enjoyed playing with the Valparaiso University/Community Band and Windiana, taught private lessons throughout Northwest Indiana, judged many concert and jazz band competitions across the State and had a lifelong passion for building and flying hobby airplanes. Friends are invited to a special reunion celebrating John's life at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2014 at Stoney Run County Park in Hebron, IN. Donations can be made to Betty Shotliff 299 Boardwalk, Hebron, IN 46341. A hero to some, an inspiration to many, John Shotliff will be sorely missed by all.

I hope Mr. Shotliff knew how much of an impact he had on so many lives. Band was more than a class. We were a family and music has been such a huge part of my life since John put a baritone in my hands. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.
