I had the honor of having Mark Horvath as one of my closest friends for almost 47 years. We met weekly for many years to exchange Andrean/Lake Central stories. I (along with his family) was touched by how many former students came to the showing and the funeral. I'm glad to see testimonials from Gavit, Immaculate Concepcion, and Andrean. He TRULY loved teaching and his students. He was "Rain Man", because he remembered his students so well.He confided several times that he wanted to meet EVERY student at Andrean. What his daughter wrote in his obituary was true: he never wanted to retire from teaching.
I looked forward to our weekly breakfast meetings. Saturday mornings will never be the same.
He loved you and please know you students made him love his life.
His friend,
Kerry A. Zajicek (Gavit 1966 to his last day in Intensive Care June 26,2013)

Mr. Horvath will be missed by many and I'm sorry the future generation of kids will not be able to have the extreme pleasure of being in his classes. He was one of my favorite teachers ever!

Our heartfelt condolences to the Horvath family. We are so sorry for your loss. Our son Andrew was priveleged to have Mr. Horvath as a teacher and friend. He inspired our son's interest in government, politics and law. Most importantly, he taught what it meant to be a man of good moral character. Thank you, Mr. Horvath. "Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!" Matthew 25.:23 God bless. Mr. H was my 8th grade teacher at Immaculate Conception in Whiting in 1979. He was my "favorite" teacher EVER!!!!! He taught me some valuable lessons. I have so many great memories of that man and share them always. About 5 years ago, we reconnected at my sons basketball game and talked and got reacquainted. He did not change over those years. To his family, sending many hugs because I am sure he will be truly missed. To his friends, stay strong for his family. Mr. H will join the other GREAT Angels above. My prayers are being sent to the family.

Dear Horvath family:
Our sincere prayers and thoughts are with you at this time. Our family was blessed by having Mark in our lives, he adored my daughter and enjoyed joking around with my son. Please know that he always found a way to make my children smile. For that light he brought into their lives I would be forever in his debt. May God Bless you and bring you some comfort during your time of need.

Andrean during the 80's-it was a right of passage to have Mr. Horvath for Econ/Govt.! My twin sister and I were in one of the classes together. He couldn't tell us apart so he sat us in opposite corners! We would both answer when he'd say "Ryan" to mess with him and he would smile. Many years later I meet him at Kankakee Valley HS during basketball season and I heard the usual "Ryan!" He remembered his students always. God bless you, Mark, and thanks.

Mr Horvath was my Government teacher at Andrean. I recently saw him at the Andrean open house. Even though I hadn't seen him in over 20 years he still remembered my first and last name and the college I attended. That just shows how much he cared for his students and loved what he did.I was lucky enough to be a part of the convention my senior year. He made it exciting and memorable. It is so unfortunate that my son will not have him for a teacher but he did get a chance to meet him. He always had a smile on his face. Mr Horvath you will be truly missed. I went to Gavit High School with Mark and also worked with him at Baskin -Robbins 31 Ice Cream store on Indpls Blvd in Hammond. He introduced me to my high school sweetheart, Ed Wasiuta. We often double dated with him. I also went to watch Mark, Ed Wasiuta, and Don Johnsen play CYA basketball. They were on the same team. Mark even went to Winona State with me in MN. If fact, he drove me up there our first year at Winona. He'd charge a group of us who lived in The Region $7 a piece to drive us home over breaks. I'm so sorry to hear of his untimely death and wish his family my deepest sympathies. He was a unique person who left this earth far better place by being here. May the peace of God sustain the family at this time of their great loss.

Mr. Horvath was dedicated and generous. He always gave me a hard time in class for my fondness of President Reagan. But on graduation day he came up to tell me, rather proudly, that Reagan was actually his favorite president (it happened to be the day after Reagan died). I'll always remember that moment...by giving me a hard time about Reagan in class he was teaching me far more than he would have by telling me how much he admired Reagan on the first day of class. In so doing he provided me with an opportunity to broaden my thinking abilities, the trait of a fine educator.. May he rest in the peace of Christ.
